How do I change my thermostat in my '05 Impala 3.4 V6..I changed the water pump so I need the thermostat info

Hot Coolant Temp light came on. So when I turned the heat on full blast, nothing but cool air came out. If I'm not mistaken that means the thermostat needs to be replaced. She was leaking fluid, but I changed the water pump and that stopped. Soooo, any help I can receive will be greatly appreciated. How do I change my thermostat in my '05 Impala 3.4 V6..I changed the water pump so I need the thermostat infoOn this type engine (3.4) the coolant system has to be bleed while refilling with replacement coolant. How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?

I'm in the midst of changing out a bad thermostat on my 1996 2.2 ltr 4cyl Pontiac Sunfire... I've found the housing for the thermostat and am ready to go as long as I can find out how to drain the existing coolant from the engine.

How do I do it?

Thank you for any help you can give me.How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?You're going to get some spillage no matter what you do, but you really have to drain all the coolant out of the engine AND the radiator to keep from having a huge mess. Most GM cars have a drain cock on the bottom of the radiator, but unfortunately, they usually get stuck and are made out of plastic, so there's a good chance you'll break it if you try to force it. The easiest way to get the coolant out is to loosen the clamp on the hose that goes to the bottom of the radiator and pull the hose off. You'll need a large pan to get all the coolant, and it is going to splatter, but it's really the most efficient way. Good luck! How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?You need to drain the radiator from the bottom using the petcock valve .... look hard enough and you'll find it.How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?There should be a drain plug in your radiator which this will be located at the very bottom of it. When you drain it make sure that you catch the fluid in some type of container. Coolant is very poisonest to the environment as well as animals since it smells and tastes sweet to them. It is a very sad thing to see this type of poisoning in an animal. Causes convulsions, nerological damage, froathing at the mouth, and so on. So please keep this in mind when doing this. How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?i dont think these newer cars have a petcock drain in the radiator i know mine dont its a 92 you just have to take off bottom radiator hose that should do for changing the thermostat. How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?I agree with Michael G, I believe those vehicles drained by removing the lower radiator hose.

1997 Jetta Easiest way to get to and change the Thermostat? Also ECT Specs?

2.0L 5 Speed. with A/C. The thermostat is on the bottom side of the waterpump and is blocked by the Alternator and A/C unit. Is there a mechanic out there than can tell me the easiest way to get to the thermostat. I'm only a little mechanically inclined. :) I do have the Chiltons manual but it doesn't say how to get to the Thermostat. I have replaced Thermostats before in my toyoto... very easy! Also i need to test the Coolant Temp Sensor(ECT), what spec readings should I be getting? It is a four terminal connector.

Thanks, Tanya1997 Jetta Easiest way to get to and change the Thermostat? Also ECT Specs?Volkswagen has a problem with the water pump impeller falling off causing overheating, running hot, no circulation, cooling fan not kicking on. If this might be your problem you can see the water pump impeller after removing the thermostat. To get the thermostat you need a 1/4%26quot; drive 8mm or 10mm socket with a 1/4%26quot; drive wobble socket. This may require removing the alternator on some models. Hope this helps.

BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement?

My 2003 BMW 325i has not been heating up properly for a few weeks now. The temperature gauge starts to move towards warm, but then falls back down to cold, and no matter what temperature I set the heat to, it continues to blow cold air. I had an oil change today, and had my coolant topped up, but the problem remains. Will I need to replace my thermostat, and if so how expensive is it?BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement? If your thermostat is stuck open your car will almost never warm up. My buddy has this problem so for now he covers his radiator (about 2/3) with a cardboard. It doesn't completely solve his problem but it get his car (a) going (b) slightly warmer for heating

If this works for you then you definitely have stuck thermostat.

===

Usually thermostat can be done in 1 hour labor.

You have a BMW and the cost is probably more (more stuff to remove and re-install). I know everything cost more on my audi.

If you go to your dealer, don't say %26quot;I want my thermostat replaced%26quot;. They will replace it whether you need it or not. Tell them what is wrong and let them decide if it is the thermostat.

Good Luck

P.S. NEVER top off with water. It will freeze and crack your engine block. At best, it will freeze inside your heater core (the part that warms up your cab) and will never blow warm air.BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement? This most certainly sounds like your thermostat. Not only is it an easy fix with basic tools, it is cheap as well. Perhaps one of the least expensive things to fix on a BMW. Try Autohaus AZ for OEM replacement parts and do the job yourself! They have helped me many times and now have the satisfaction of doing service on my car for much less than taking it to the shop. Visit their website here: http://www.autohausaz.com

Your thermostat is located on the top right side of the engine block, just below the valve cover. If you follow the intake hose from your radiator, it will go to a metal housing on the engine block. It is in that housing that you will find the thermostat. Should be a 13 or 15 mm allen bolt (two of them). Make sure to scrape the housing clear of any remaining gasket material and don't forget to install the new gasket. One should come with the thermostat kit. All in all you will probably only spend $30 to replace this. Your car will actually run better and your heater will now work. Sure beats spending over $200 for the repair at a BMW shop.

Hope this info helps and good luck servicing your car.

Just love the BMW in-line 6..... easy to work on and lasts FOREVER!BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement?you will need to see a mechanic it is a common fault on one of the bmw models , the thermostat is electriclal and water gets in the connections [design fault]BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement? It depends if the 2003 325i has an electric fan or a viscous coupling fan (ie; engine powered fan).

My 2000 323ci has a viscous coupling fan and that has to be removed in order to access the thermostat. I had to get some loaner tools from Autozone to undo the fan.

If your car has an electric fan, then it's a lot easier.

bavauto.com has the parts. The thermostat runs for about $60 I believe (just check it out at www.bavauto.com).

You might as well also do a complete coolant (antifreeze) change as well since removing the thermostat will cause some loss of coolant anyway. So instead of just topping it up, drain it (plastic drain valve located bottom corner of radiator), stick a garden hose into the system (with thermostat removed) and finally install new thermostat and refill it.

You may use either distilled water with BMW coolant or try the %26quot;waterless%26quot; coolant from bavauto.

If you want the dealer to fix this, they will most likely charge you 1 to 1.5 hour of labor for this job. But everything will be marked up considerably - including parts and supplies...etc.

Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?

Hello, I own a 2001 mazda protege and the temperature gauge has been acting up. I have recently changed the water pump and timing belt as well as changed the oil and added new coolant. But after driving for about five or ten minutes, the temperature gauge gets very hot. And recently, it reached the max and the coolant began to boil. I have been too afraid to drive it around. Any suggestions why this happens and how I should go about fixing this problem? Thanks.Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?Check your thermostat. If it isn't working then your car will overheat. It doesn't sound like a fan because it is overheating too fast. Also when you fill the coolant up in the radiator it is best to do it while the vehicle is running. Leave the cap off and when the car warms up it will cycle the radiator fluid into the engine and give you a chance to fill the radiator up some more. A lot of times people do not do this and it leaves the engine empty of fluid and the radiator full making it harder for the car to cool down or even leaving air pockets that can cause overheating. Also if you pull the thermostat out and boil it in some water when the water starts to boil it should pop open if not then it needs to be replaced.Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?Did you bleed the air out of the system when you refilled it ?Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?Yea I have advise and that is replace the radiator and thermostat and stop putting tap water in the damn thing! Only use distilled water with the radiator fluid and don't buy the premix shitttt! Tap water has lime deposits in it and they collect around the radiator vents at the top and plug it up to where the fluid can't flow freely through it and it over heats and also it collects around the thermostat and it will stop working and quickly over heat the car and you have to replace it and the distilled water and radiator fluid that you put in will stop this from ever happening again! Once again! NO TAP WATER! Got me? Good luck with that! If you over heat it too much you will blow a head gasket and the oil and water will mix in the oil pan or the radiator or run into one of the cylinders and lock up the engine! Get it fixed!Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions? All being well as far as the cooling system is concerned. Then I will almost guarantee that the fan sensor is not allowing the fan to cool off the rad . Possibly the fan may also be stuck and the power not making it run. I really think it is fan related.

  • How much does it cost to change water pump in 1997 Chevy Malibu v4, 2.4L?

I live in Seattle WA and the car has 105k miles on it. the coolant starts to leak and checked with few mechanic and diagnosed that water put has to be replaced. their estimations were outrageous and i wanna make sure i don't get ripped off. can anyway give me a true estimation,How much does it cost to change water pump in 1997 Chevy Malibu v4, 2.4L?call three local shops get three prices of their work

    will get a better ideal

and heres a price estimatorHow much does it cost to change water pump in 1997 Chevy Malibu v4, 2.4L?Don't know about that model but a water pump is usually an unbolt, replace and tighten bolts operation - 15 minutes. the pump itself is low tech and fairly cheap. You're probably looking at $100.

1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this?

Recently aquired car ( see last weeks question! ). This problem was highlighted to me, before purchase, as follows; consistent loss of coolant but no visible leaks, no change on the temp. guage, no change in performance. On long journeys very slight steaming visible when stationary. A mechanic advised previous owner that it is v. likely a gasket failure at the bottom of the cylinders, where they meet in their ' V ' configuration - %26quot; not a difficult fix %26quot;. Does this fit in with anyone else's experience of these V8's? Could it be a DIY job? Thanks in advance.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this?If you are thinking of doing something like this, don't. Just take it to a garage and they can sort it out. If they don't fix the problem you can take it back to them saying, you haven't fixed it, fix it. Whereas if you did it yourself you could totally screw it up and it may not even drive once you have done it.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this?IF YOUR MECHANICALLY INCLINED.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this? It's so easy to damage parts of the engine when putting it all together. You would have to follow the directions to the letter. Everything would have to be re-torqued properly. Yes it can be done but like I said. There could be some great difficulties and road blocks.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this? You really, really have to know what your doing to DIY it is no easy fix you have to take the top off the engine and get the heads shaved before you put it back together.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this? Before you start tearing a %26quot;V%26quot; apart,a big job,get a couple of tests done.First is a reactive coolant test, this is a liquid that changes colour from blue to green if there is any combustion gases in the coolant,it's definative.Second would be a coolant pressure test, the whole coolant system is pressurised up to 15-20 psi,and believe me,if any micro holes are present,it'll shoot out.You can buy the coolant reactive dye tester from Amazon.

Do you have any stats on how the Buick Century has had to have engine gaskets replaced due to Dex Cool coolant?

I have a 2003 Buick Century with v-6 engine. Are there any stats available on engine gaskets that have had to be replaced due to Dex Cool antifreeze? I just changed mine and put the regular green antifreeze in it. Is this ok??Do you have any stats on how the Buick Century has had to have engine gaskets replaced due to Dex Cool coolant? The intake gasket is a common leak on those when you replaced what gasket did you get? Felpro or OE are best as theyve redesigned the gasket. I've seen a number of these go bad i think this last summer alone we had to replace 4 or 5 of em at the shop i work at. As far as swapping antifreeze as long as you got all the dex cool out itll be fine to run the other stuff. But if you mixed em expect problems later on as they dont miss well and can cause more problems. And yes the dex cool was the cause it eats away at the gasket and the intake some of em had plastic intakes if yours does did you check it before putting it back on? We had to replace 2 intakes completely when we redid the gaskets.Do you have any stats on how the Buick Century has had to have engine gaskets replaced due to Dex Cool coolant? It is not the coolant that cuased the problem it is the gaskets.Newer gaskets have metal inserts and come with new bolts and an updated torque sequence.

Do you have any stats on how the Buick Century has had to have engine gaskets replaced due to Dex Cool coolant? All the research done on Dex cool shows it is when the system is low on coolant for long periods of time. Maintain you cooling system and you will not have problems. Do you have any stats on how the Buick Century has had to have engine gaskets replaced due to Dex Cool coolant?I agree with Mike, I have never had a problem with dex cool on any vehicle I owned because flushes get done when they are supposed to.

'03 Century, when and how often have you had cooling system flushes performed and do you have receipts?

    Did I get ripped off?

Ok, I took my 98 DOdge neon for a winter check(102,000km's). My horn failed on me too, so I knew I needed a new one. ANyway, in the end, my brake shoes were seperated, my coolant liquid was changing colour and there was rust on my drums, plus I had to get a brand new horn as opposed to a new one. So, parts and labour for horn, brake shoes, coolant flush, drum rotation and winter check up it came to $702

Can you tell me what you think about how much I paid?

Thank youDid I get ripped off?yea i think you did get ripped off because you could have did all of that your self and it would have been a lot cheaper. Horn cost about $15.00, Brake Shoes cost $15.00, New coolnat cost about $10.00, Drum rotation cost nothing if you do it yourself and a winter check up like at dodge cost about prolly $50.00 So you could have got by for only $90.00 Dodge is a big ripoff!Did I get ripped off?where did you go?Did I get ripped off?If your coolant has never been changed, you needed that.. I hope you got a new thermostat to go with it while they had it drained. You must have miss understood what they did to your brakes.. They do not rotate drums.. They %26quot;Turn%26quot; drums and in the case of your front disc brakes they %26quot;Turn%26quot; the rotors.. That is a term used when they resurface them to true them up at the time you put on new pads or shoes. All discs and drums can have some surface rust in the area where the pads do not touch, that is normal.Did I get ripped off?probably soDid I get ripped off?yes you slightly overpaid a little in the sum of about 300 bucks or more, all of what they done shouldn't have come to no where near that much, its too late now but i hope you don't ever go back the that shop again, that was slightly over pricing that job a little, all shops have different labor rates but that one must have been pretty high, just remember this as a lesson i guess, good luck ,and merry x-mas.Did I get ripped off?You could have done it all your self and saved close to 600 dollars.

New Shoes: 20 to 60 dollars

New drums: 20 to 40 dollars (each)

Resurface drums (off the car): 10 dollars each

    New coolant: 12 dollars

    New horn:10 to 30 dollars

Being able to do it all your self? Priceless!

Any shop is going to make money on the parts they sell you and to put the parts on. At least when you get the work done in a shop, you have a warranty and you get to keep your hands cleanDid I get ripped off?Do it yourself. Most everything you had done can be done yourself. And you would know it was done. I know sometimes , some shops will charge for something but not actually do the service .Did I get ripped off?I'd say that the seller had you bamboozled--the car is in BAD shape, if your description is accurate. The coolant changing color, to me, is a sign of GRAVE internal engine damage, as in oil getting into the coolant, most likely a blown head gasket. The $702 mentioned is barely the tip of the iceberg--you may be looking at a replacement powertrain. The separated brakeshoes and rusty drums lead me to suspect that this Neon was in the drink.Did I get ripped off?you got riped off done it your self for 100 easy easy work

How would i fix a coolant leak that has?

i have a 95 chevy blazer that i recently changed the radiator but not the cap i used my old cap from my old radiator. i think that might be my problem but im not too sure. this morning i found some coolant that was leaking into the inside of my truck what can cause this to happen? and how could i fix the problem? How would i fix a coolant leak that has?You have a leaking heater core or a leaking heater hose or connection. You may have to remove some of the internal dash panel to gain access. I would check the hoses first to make sure they are OK, but while you are in there, change the hoses anyway on one this old. Good luck. How would i fix a coolant leak that has? That would be your heater core.... you need to get a new one. It is leaking inside into your vehicle. How would i fix a coolant leak that has?First you need to find the source of the problem. Run the engine, goose the throttle on the throttle body and see if you can find the source of the drips.

I'd be looking at radiator hoses or the cap since you said you just replaced the radiator. Or, you could automatically eliminate the cap as a problem if you go ahead and replace it.

Edit: Oops, %26quot;inside%26quot; as in the cabin or %26quot;inside%26quot; as in the engine bay? If its the cabin then its the heater core. Not too expensive but it can be hard to replace depending on how the dash is designed. How would i fix a coolant leak that has?Yup....Heater core.

It's like a little radiator in your heater box.

  • Dirty coolant in reservoir, but clean in radiator?

This doesn't make sense to me (or I don't fully understand how the cooling system works). The coolant in my engine and radiator looks like new, nice and green. However, the coolant in the reservoir is dark and brown. This is a Jeep Cherokee with a inline six, Automatic Transmission. I have to add coolant to the reservoir every few weeks because it gets low. I was going to change the water pump, but stopped because I noticed the difference in color between the reservoir and the radiator. Anybody have any advice?Dirty coolant in reservoir, but clean in radiator?getting low coolant without leaks could be due to a blown head. have it checked just in case. also, when temperature is cold , stick your finger inside radiator and wipe around inside. you will get thesame dirt yousee in the reservoir.. time to have a system flushing. the dirt you see in the reservoir could be oil contaminants due to a blown head.Dirty coolant in reservoir, but clean in radiator?that is fine you find that alot... the coolant in the radiator is contained not open to air and other contaminants where the coolant in the jug is open to air and containment's not to mention may even react a bit to the plastic bottle itself..

    hope this helps

Why is coolant leaking from my 1990 Mazda Protege?

We just go the car and it worked fine one day, we added coolant and it was fine. The next day it stalled and started to overheat. After cooling down, the resevoir was full, but it still took an entire bottle of coolant. Driving it home a mile or so all the coolant leaked out and left a trail of where we came from. We checked the hose coming from the radiator and it was coming from further back and is just pouring out. it is on the left hand side. What could this be? A hose? Waterpump? If it is the waterpump, any advice on how to change it out?Why is coolant leaking from my 1990 Mazda Protege?you mentioned you just got it.. if it sat for a long time on a usedcar lot my guess would be the water pump seal has failedWhy is coolant leaking from my 1990 Mazda Protege? If you can't see where it is leaking from (could be anything on an 18 year-old car) then tow it to a shop to have it pressure tested.

Please help me with my '85 accord--old gas?

i bought this '85 accord 5-speed. It is carb not fuel injection.

It was sitting for two years. It has a half tank of gas that was also sitting inside the tank for two years. I drove the car for nearly an hour and it drove great! So i bought it and drove it home, which was about another hour. I parked and turned it off. I tried to start it like 5 min later and it would not start! It would turn but the engine would not catch on! I waited a couple hours and went back to it and then it started right up.

What could this be? Should I drain whats left from the gas tank or is it safe to just keep driving and burn it off? And if you say drain it, then how do i do that?

What else should I do to a car that has been sitting for 2 years? What fluids should I change or other parts? coolant? transmission oil? spark plugs? ect...?

Thanks alot and God Bless! Please help me with my '85 accord--old gas?Well, could be several things going on, but a cheap start will be, change the gasoline filter, buy a water treatment (small additive bottle to the gas) at any car store, also add at the same time a carburator cleaner, another additive, drive like that and see if start getting better. If none of that works, you might have problems with the cold start switch, I think at that point if you don't understand mechanic you should check with some proffesional mechanic to solve the problem. Tipical problem of a car that have been parked for a long time. Check if spark plugs are ok, etc. Hard to make a diagnosis without seeing the car, maybe the choke is not working , etc. Trust additives, they are quite good, they save money in maintenance and gasoline, by the way, put fresh gasoline in your tank. The gas additive will disolve any water in the gas tank and stop any problem of water in the tank, the other additive (carburator cleaner) will clean all of the carburator inside. That Accord is a nice powerfull small car, very popular at the time, good on gas, a second or third car to keep, good to have around.

Good luck. Please help me with my '85 accord--old gas?It may be the gas, but it also may not. I had a similar problem with my 90 civic, only the problem was the main relay. When the engine was hot, the car couldn't start, and if it did start immediately, it stalled out as soon as it started. It generally took 5 minutes before it could start again. Check all the fluids and if you don't know what you're doing, get the parts checked by a mechanic and tell them what you are experiencing. I would drain the gas just to be safe, you can never tell for sure what the problem is until you solve it.

How do I know when to change the thermostat or know when it isn't working??

I flushed my radiator about three times until water was clear and then refilled with half and half, coolant/distilled water. I did this because it hadn't been done since I bought the truck ('95 Ford Ranger, 107K miles) from a neighbor two years before, plus the fact that the truck's coolant temp gauge needle was going past the middle mark but not all the way into %26quot;H.%26quot; Afterwards, it was a little better, but it still happened once in a while for long trips on the highway. Just changed the air filter w/ a K%26amp;N filter and strangely things seemed to improve, but the needle still moves a little past the middle. I don't know what else to do. So, I'm wondering about the thermostat...How do I know when to change the thermostat or know when it isn't working??If the engine takes too long to heat up then it probably is a bad thermostat. Watch the temp Gage and see if the temperature is in the proper range when the temperature gets up to the proper operating temp then the thermostat will open up letting the water circulate through the engine. You can tell when this happens as you may be able to hear the thermostat click and followed by a sudden and temporary drop in temperature as the cooler water from the radiator starts going through the engine and the warmer water from the engine goes to the radiator to be cooled by the fan also you may sense a sudden and temporary drop in engine speed when the fan kicks in .How do I know when to change the thermostat or know when it isn't working??thermostats go out often. they are easy enough to change and cheap. is your fan working? with it warming up your fan could have shorted out a while ago and it's just now affecting you temp gage. if it is okay. just change the thermostat. if that doesn't work pay for the diagnosticHow do I know when to change the thermostat or know when it isn't working??No idea how your gage is calibrated, but, most of the time a %26quot;stat%26quot; will stick open, not shut. That will cause too low of a temp and no heat from the heater. Too hot (in or real close to)the red and that is more apt to be from some other cause, fan, air flow etc.How do I know when to change the thermostat or know when it isn't working??When your vehicle starts to over heat, check thermostart and when it starts to operate below normal temperaturesHow do I know when to change the thermostat or know when it isn't working??First off what engine do you have? the thermostat should be changed every 2 years. You should have the cooling system pressure checked for leaks.

How do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?

Coolant is leaking at a good pace from the water pump. I need to replace it. Is this a job that I can do myself? What are the steps? Should I replace the lower hose and flush the radiator too?

Or would it be better to just take it to the mechanic? Whats a fair price for that?

thanks i really appreciate itHow do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?Based on your questions I would say take it to a mechanic. Have the hoses replaced while you're at it. It's up to you about the flush but the coolant will get replaced in the process anyway. About $100. for quality parts add for labor. How do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?I would say take it to a shop to have it done. This way everything can be done right. And as with the coolant it needs to be flushed every two years but use prestone anti freeze after the flush.if you go to a parts store and get the parts and anti freeze this way you'll have the parts that is needed for replacement at the shop you take it to.And while your there at the parts store pick up 2 gallons of anti freeze you'll need at least 1 and 1/2 or so gallons of it to refill the system and blend it with water as a top off.But make sure you don't get the 50/50 mix it is half water and half anti freeze.Anti freeze has a higher boiling point to help keep the engine from over heating. You also might want to replace the thremostat also with the same degree of one.Ask the parts store for one and your hoses top and bottom.hgm20002000@yahoo.comHow do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?If you have a decent tool box you can do it your self . step 1 remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Step 2 Get under the truck and find the drain cock to the radiator. Remove the radiator cap, then put a large pan under the drain cock and open it. Have some floor dry on hand if any spills on the drive way or in the garage floor. You don't want the family pet to even taste it. IT WILL KILL THEM!!! Step 3. remove the hose clamps from the radiator and the motor. when the coolant has drained, remove the upper hose First. then the lower. There may be a little fluid in it.Step 4. get another pan for transmission fluid. Disconnect the transmission lines from the radiator. If the Power steering lines also run to the radiator remove them last. Let the fluid drain from the lines. Step 5. Remove the fan shroud Top First. It is in 2 halves.top and bottom. There are 2 ten millimeter screws that hold the top half of the shroud to the radiator on each side. remove them. Then remove the top half of the shroud. Now for some work Carefully wiggle the bottom half out the bottom of the truck or the top. Then remove the radiator. Step 6. You will need special tools for this step ... A hammer and chisel. You need to tap the fan nut with the chisel , counter clockwise to remove the fan and fan clutch. It will take a little time and patience. Once you get the fan off, you are ready for Step 6. The bolts that hold on the water pump are either 10 or 12 mm. There may also be a %26quot;heater hose connected to the water pump. remove it. Then remove the water pump. Now TIPS ... Get a New Lifetime Warranty Water Punp.... Get New Radiator Hoses and Clamps. Get a New %26quot;No Fail%26quot; Thermostat. Have the radiator vatted and cleaned and pressure tested. Get a New Radiator Cap. Clean the radiator over flow bottle. Use a couple of empty milk jugs to pour the old antifreeze in. Take it to a salvage yard for disposal.. Everything goes back together in reverse order. I recommend %26quot;Ultra-blue%26quot; gasket sealer. Once you have everything back together, Before you fill the antifreeze, add a can of Prestone Water Pump Lube and Sealer. Then ad the antifreeze 50/50 mix. I prefer Prestone.. Good luck Merry Christmas. Any questions E-Mail me

  • How much coolant to add to 350 in 63 impala?

So I changed a thrmostst in my 350 after it went bad and just added water to radiator. Now I want to flush out radiator. Can someone tell me how much coolant/anifreeze I need to add? ThanksHow much coolant to add to 350 in 63 impala?Hi,You say you are flushing out radiator,so you start from scratch. The antifreeze container will have a chart on it ,where you pick the protection you what for your area that you live in. Usually you use a 50/50 mix.You also can buy the antifreeze in a 50/50 mix and just add to radiator.Good Luck. How much coolant to add to 350 in 63 impala?Get 2 gallons, mix it 50/50. Fill it up, let it run for a minute, then add more until it quits going down.

How to change a thermostat on a 1999 alero?

flushed coolant . still overheating, while standing still mostly.... car is cooler on the highway. How to change a thermostat on a 1999 alero?Dude

RTB that means read the book. Get a manual and read it. Also high quality tools (husky or craftsman) are a must. If you want to learn about cars find a shop that will let you, even sweep the floor and get a job in the industry. Always RTB if you don't know!!!How to change a thermostat on a 1999 alero? The symptom you describe sounds like your cooling fan is inoperative. You just said it yourself, OVERHEATING WHILE STANDING STILL= no air flow through radiator. During vehicle cruising at highway speeds, there is sufficient airflow circulating through the radiator, which would not require the cooling fan to operate. One way to check this is to turn on the AC, and see if the cooling fan comes on. If not, either the cooling fan motor itself, or wiring to the cooling fan is the cause. Another way to verify cooling fan operation is to disconnect the ECT sensor with the vehicle running, the fan should come on at HIGH speed. If not, the ECT or its associated wiring could be the cause. Hope this helps. Good luck.

A question on radiator coolant? how often do you refill coolant to maintain its level?

i think my old car 1992 buick consumes more than usual coolant. i buy at least 3 gallons a year and refill its level evrey now and then. i don't see any leaks though because they changed the hose last year and did some tests.

but this morning, just by instinct- i checked and it's almost empty! had i unknowingly driven it for an hour or so, it may have led to problems.

any ideas on this?A question on radiator coolant? how often do you refill coolant to maintain its level? One should only have to add coolant a couple of times a year, in early summer and early winter. Water in the radiator is another story. In the summer check it regularly and add more water as needed.A question on radiator coolant? how often do you refill coolant to maintain its level?Sounds like you have an internal leak do you notice smoke from the exaust?A question on radiator coolant? how often do you refill coolant to maintain its level?the head gasket is probably leaking a bit into the cylinders. You wouldn't see any leaks because it is burning it off. You may be able to see it in the exhaust. I would look whiter than normal.A question on radiator coolant? how often do you refill coolant to maintain its level? You should check your water and oil/s every day! first thing in the morning is best for engine oil, and radiator water, if your oil is grey colour on the inside of the filler cap or on the dip stick then you have a water leak into your engine this can be caused from a few areas one is the head gasket you can have it checked by a workshop they can use a handy device which has a liquid which changes colour as it detects gases in your water system its a cheap way to check.

Back to the daily check it is common for welsh plugs to corrode and leak without you knowing and this can also empty your radiator over night or on a trip (just a pin hole) can be enough to cause a loss of water. good luckA question on radiator coolant? how often do you refill coolant to maintain its level? Before you do anything drastic buy a new radiator cap and fill the radiator and run it a few days, keeping a check on it and see if that helps.

How much doesit cost for this..?

    hi

how much does it cost to change transmision fluid and coolant for 2000 chevy impala car..How much doesit cost for this..?Figure $85-115 for the transmission and $40-60 for the coolant.

When you get the transmission done, make sure they remove the transmission pan, clean it, replace the gasket, and replace the filter. Many shops use a 'flush machine' - they claim it's better, but they just stir up dirt and leave the old filter in - so your new fluid is immediately contaminated. Do a Google search and you should come up with more info on the procedure; allpar.com has some good info. How much doesit cost for this..? You can expect about 140.00 for the two, best to wait for a special to save your money. Coolant type is important, so make sure they use the fluid recommended for your car as well as the proper fluid for the trans. The best systems do a flush on both, don't worry about the trans filter unless the fluid is very dirty and is recommended by your shop. Many transmissions don't even have a paper filter anymore but have a screen that is only restricted if there is extreme wear.

The other concern is the water they use to cut the coolant to a 50/50 mix, most water contains minerals which cause problems in cooling systems so give them two gallons of distilled water to use. (I have never worked at or seen a shop have or use the proper water) I make a point to use factory fluids and distilled water in my cars with zero failures ever in mine. If you love your car use care and it will last you a very long time, make sure the shop knows you like your car and ask them questions to prove it.

It is very easy.

Chevy impala 2002?if it did not go off when you filled it like it was supposed to do then low coolant sensor may be badChevy impala 2002?the coolant light should go off when you fill it up...make sure the connector going into the reservoir is plugged in and secure.

for the light....turn the key to accessory mode..push the gas pedal down three times within 5 seconds...it should blink...then turn off.Chevy impala 2002?You reset the change oil light by pressing the gas pedal to the floor 3 times in 5 sec with the key in the run position. The light will flash and go out. The low coolant sensor is in the right tank on the radiator and most likely need to be removed and cleaned as sludge builds up on it causing the light to stay on.

  • How do I keep rust out of the coolant system of a 1999 Blazer?

The Dex Cool coolant used in the 1999 Blazer seems to react with the engine in some models causing a lot of rust that gets into the heater core. I've had the entire system flushed numerous times, heater core replaced twice, water pump replaced, radiator cleaned out and repaired and all hoses replaced. Has anyone experienced the same problem and found a workable solution for it. Has anyone tried changing to regular antifreeze with any success? Any suggestions will be appreciated. How do I keep rust out of the coolant system of a 1999 Blazer? It shouldnt be causing rust if the ratio is correct. Iron Oxide becomes a problem with the 4.3's if your mix is less than 40-60 af/water.

Dexcool is an organic acid technology (OAT) antifreeze. When it is mixed with Ethylene Glycol they can remove the corrosion inhibitors and cause rust. They can also Gel and combined with the dexcool dye it may look like rust. You should start from scratch, flush everything out and use a regular ethylene Glycol. You may be causing damage by electrolysis to components if you don't get this problem straightened out.How do I keep rust out of the coolant system of a 1999 Blazer?you shouldn't have a problem if you mix the coolant and water 50/50. You can also use the green stuff. I used to work at a Chevy Dealership until i left there to go to a ford dealership as a technician and GM calls for 50/50. Personally i never seen a vehicle last 2 years with dex cool. I agree with the other answers about flushing your system again and putting in the premixxed stuff as it is very accurately mixed, just make sure its mixed half and half and you should be okHow do I keep rust out of the coolant system of a 1999 Blazer?use pink coolant.

    BUY THE ALREADY MIX FORMULA

the mix Yourself formula needs that You put 50% water to the coolant

    And guess what?

the tap water has chemicals that destroy the coolant(glycol) and turned into something else ,but, coolant

Your tap water is corrosive do not used as coolant. How do I keep rust out of the coolant system of a 1999 Blazer? You should have no problem using 'regular' antifreeze. I recommend the premixed stuff because it is mixed with distilled water, thus avoiding the mineral contaminants you get when mixing tap water and antifreeze. How do I keep rust out of the coolant system of a 1999 Blazer?I have used Dex-cool before and haven't had any rust problems. What kind of water are you mixing the antifreeze with? Tap water or distilled water. Always use distilled water which is available at any grocery store. It has been distilled to remove the minerals and using it will prevent any minerals normally found in tap water from depositing in the cooling system. Also make sure the radiator overflow bottle always has coolant in it which prevents air from getting into the cooling system. That is really important when using Dex-cool.How do I keep rust out of the coolant system of a 1999 Blazer?Flush radiator and refill with fresh anti-freeze. Most anti-freeze have rust inhibitors in the fluid. I never had this problem or that vehicle but I know regular anti-freeze helps with keeping the radiator from rusting. Get the pre-mixed anti-freeze. I dont think adding water would be a good idea.

I just recently changed the water pump, but now it's not bumping the coolant through and temp rising, any idea?

my car is a mitsubishi magna 1994 executive model. any ideas? how to get the coolant pumping again and for the temp not to overheat?I just recently changed the water pump, but now it's not bumping the coolant through and temp rising, any idea?thermostat it might be sticking or the radiator is plug upI just recently changed the water pump, but now it's not bumping the coolant through and temp rising, any idea?Try putting a new thermostat in and make sure that your belts are in the right direction. Your friendly mechanic.I just recently changed the water pump, but now it's not bumping the coolant through and temp rising, any idea? With 50 years working in the trade the fault finding methods spoken about in these posts are truly amazing. For example if you had alternator ,starter or battery trouble we would pinpoint the faulty unit in less than ten minutes and the repair would carry a six month warranty.I frequently see and hear about all three units being replaced not once ,twice or even three times and there is still doubt about the repair ,how do these people manage to hold a job.Another great favourite seems to be replacing water pumps because they are not pumping, yes we are now really in dream world, the pump is an impeller one and do not stop circulating, leaking ,perhaps ,yes.I just recently changed the water pump, but now it's not bumping the coolant through and temp rising, any idea?I believe that you have an air lock created when you changed the coolant

Did you keep the engine running when you put the new coolant in?

How much money/hassle can someone save by knowing more about their car than the maintenance schedule?

I've heard that maintaining today's cars is the most important thing, and that it's pretty simple. What if someone was to delve deeper, maybe learn to do a few things themselves, like coolant flushing or spark plug changing,....and generally knew the inner workings of cars well, without actually being able to do many repairs themselves? How much money/hassle can someone save by knowing more about their car than the maintenance schedule? With anything, having a little knowledge is dangerous. There are many things on a car the average person can do, if they have the correct tools. The first thing a car owner should get is a proper repair manual for that car. If you cannot understand it, don't attempt any of the repairs. Diagnosis is the most important part of any repair. Most repair manuals will list step by step directions and what tools are required. Once a problem has been isolated, 3/4 of the repair is complete. As for internal engine or transmission problems, listening as well as what is happening is important. Some engine components can be changed using only the repair manual, others require a lot of skill. This is something you will have to judge for yourself. If in doubt, don't touch it.How much money/hassle can someone save by knowing more about their car than the maintenance schedule?Maintaining a car is not simple. It is getting more and more difficult. Knowing about cars will help you little because mechanics will not try to bs you when you talk to them in technical terms. But they are pretty expensive to operate, most of mechanics in my area charge $95/hr.

You are not going to save much by doing $30 oil change yourself for $15. You will save when you do $500 timing belt job yourself for $50.How much money/hassle can someone save by knowing more about their car than the maintenance schedule?I find myself wondering if you really can save money on do it yourself maintenance these days. Perhaps so in changing air filters, pretty easy, get the right one, put it in, throw away the old one. But get into coolant flushing to use your example, and now you have a pan full of used coolant. What do you do with it? You can't dump it in a storm drain, and it's toxic to animals. Same thing with oil When I was a kid, the old oil was dumped on the weeds behind the garage, or poured in the sand pit where you kept your shovels clean and oiled. But now you have to find a recycling plant. Battery? Same deal. And old tires? Put them in the trash and you get a fine.

When you factor all that in, sometimes it's easier and cheaper to let the mechanic worry about it.How much money/hassle can someone save by knowing more about their car than the maintenance schedule?YES! When you go to the dealer it helps that you know what their talking about. When you go to a shop on the outside they (Most of the Time) can't take advantage of you. %26quot;Lastly and best%26quot; You will be able to do some of the minor maintenance jobs yourself. There are lost of schools that teach people things they need to know to keep their cars going, know enough to give the shop a good idea of what to look for when something is wrong, enough to know, that when a light comes on while driving or you hear a strange sound you'll know if something is wrong and what it might be.

%26quot;More confident when you take your car in for checks and repairs%26quot;.How much money/hassle can someone save by knowing more about their car than the maintenance schedule?Look into Amsoil synthetic lubricants, the higher initial cost is offset by higher fuel mileage, longer life of the vehicle, and longer intervals between oil changes. I change mine annually. Check out this article on the 3,000 mile oil change: http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=14

How easy is it to change a head gasket on a Rover 820 Turbo (Vitesse)?

I have a Rover 820 Vitesse Turbo N reg (1996), I know the head gasket is gone as i am getting severe water loss and oil in my coolant.

I am quite good at repairing things but when it comes to cars i am quite weiry. Can some one please give me a guide on how to fit a new head gasket and where to get a new one for my engine. Will i need new head bolts?

I have tried the so called miracle repair liquids but they did not work at all.

I really like my car so do not wish to get rid of it. Also i do not wish to pay a garage hundreds of pounds.

Any help will be very much appreciated. How easy is it to change a head gasket on a Rover 820 Turbo (Vitesse)?Mmm

I would suggest that you do get this done professionally if you are not experienced.

The main issue will be the right parts and the right tourqe settings.

If you get this wrong the gasket will not work.

Check out the procedure (or a similar one) in Haynes manual from your local library to see what I mean.

This will specify the parts and procedure.

You may need special tools to do the job.

Allthough these may be a bent screwdriver and a funny shaped spanner they may make the job possible.

Get a couple of quotes for the work if you do get a garage to do it.

I think Nationwide will do a fixed cost priced job if you don't like surprises.

How much should it cost to replace the radiator hoses on a 1999 Mercury Mystique?

My mechanic says that all the coolant hoses need to be changed but I don't want to be overcharged. If anyone has had any experience with this I would much appreciate your advice. Thank you!How much should it cost to replace the radiator hoses on a 1999 Mercury Mystique? If you did it yourself probably around 20-30 dollars for parts. A mechanic will probably charge an hour labor and a fee for disposing of the old antifreeze. How much should it cost to replace the radiator hoses on a 1999 Mercury Mystique?First off ,are there any leaks evident? if not he maybe taking you for a ride .Its seldom that all the hoses fail at the same time ,although some will replace em all at the same time as a matter of course.Typical costs will range from $15-20 per upper and lower hoses .Is he talking about replacing the heater hoses as well? add another $20 or so ...these prices do not reflect labor nor other materials like antifreeze that will be needed to be replaced as well.Worst case I wouldnt expect to pay someone else to do the job for more than $150-200 for the job.

Does my 06 Ford Explorer need to have A/C recharged, or should I change antifreeze?

A/C isn't blowing as cold of air as it should be, I just bought it in March, so am unsure how old coolant is. Could this be related to the age of the coolant, or should the A/C be recharged?Does my 06 Ford Explorer need to have A/C recharged, or should I change antifreeze?Coolant will have nothing to do with the temp of your A/C. The freon in the A/C system is what determines the temp. Sounds to me like yours could be low or have a leak. Most places will run the vehicle through a machine that evacuates what is in the system and then adds dye to the new freon so they can test to see if there are any leaks in the system. Most times these leaks are caused by O rings on the coolant lines getting worn or dried out which is no big deal to fix, but if you have a leak at the evaporator core, than that can be costly to replace.

Freon can get low over time without any issues especially if the vehicle is over 5 years old. Having them add a little to the system usually is all it needs.

Just take it to a trusted mechanic and have them check it out. most times for a simple recharge it should cost between $65.00 to $120.00 depending on their labor rate and how many pounds of freon needed to be added.

How do i know if it is time to "Change" a Thermostat?

I mean, if i can see the Coolant level %26quot;Go Down%26quot; when the Fan comes on then i know its working, also if i DO have Heat, right? Is this an either %26quot;The Thermostat Works or the Thermostat does not work%26quot; Item? How do i know if it is time to %26quot;Change%26quot; a Thermostat?Correct. You can also put the thermostat in boiling water, if it opens, it's working. If it doesn't, it's NOT working. Water boils at a temperature higher than most thermostats, so if it stays closed, it's toast ...How do i know if it is time to %26quot;Change%26quot; a Thermostat?Yeah for the most part the thermostat either opens or it doesn't. When it doesn't you'll overheat ... You could just change it out because of mileage... It's definitely a part you don't want to go bad.... And doesn't get replaced often unless it just goes bad...

Kind of like your transmission filter.... I bet it's never been changed... Ever! right?

Pretty much you open the radiator and engine drain valves (the repair manual will show the locations). Worse can you can just pull the lower radiator hose, but it wont really drain the engine. Generally the sealant stuff will have directions in what order to do everything, and they generally have you run the motor without the trhemostat, and stuff like that. How bad is debris in the engine? Do it yourself spark plug change gone bad ...?

I was just changing my spark plugs and a little debris found its way into the engine - small dried piece of a leaf and little fluid (coolant I believe.) Do I need to take it to a shop? Or will it be ok if I leave it alone? How bad is debris in the engine? Do it yourself spark plug change gone bad ...?You're fine. The leaf and fluid will get introduced to the miracle of an intake, compression, and power stroke just before the exhaust stroke sends whatever is left out the tailpipe. Replace the plugs and keep stepping. Before pulling the plugs in the future, blasting the area with some compressed air to get all that crap out of there wouldn't be a bad idea.

Now, if you had dropped a screw in there the story would be different. How bad is debris in the engine? Do it yourself spark plug change gone bad ...?If it is just a little bit, you should be able to blow it out by removing the spark plug and cranking the engine over. The piece of leaf will burn to ash and go out the exhaust when you start it up. The fluid will evaporate and leave the same way. A concern would be that the small dried piece of leaf may get lodged in the plug gap before it burns completely and fouls the plug, but you can remove the plug again and clean it if that happens. Its the things that don't burn in the combustion chamber that wreak havoc on engines. How bad is debris in the engine? Do it yourself spark plug change gone bad ...?I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can leave the spark plug out while cranking the engine over for a couple of seconds. The remnants of the leaf will likely blow back out of the spark plug hole. The liquid that remains within the cylinder will evaporate when you restart the engine and the cylinder goes through the combustion process. As long as it was just a few droplets, it should be fine. If you somehow managed to pour in something like half a cup of liquid into the cylinder, that's a different story...liquids do not compress and that would mean a broken piston and/or a bent rod.

I agree with the post suggesting to blow out any debris in the spark plug crevice before removing the spark plugs next time to avoid the same thing happening again. How bad is debris in the engine? Do it yourself spark plug change gone bad ...?if it is in the cylinder try to vaccum it out. you could also get a rad on the end of a pair of needlenose pliers and try to wipe up the coolant and grab the leaf. Do it yourself spark plug change gone bad ...?If you can get hold of a vacuum suck it out or let the plug out and turn the engine over a few times that should push it out the same hole it went in. If you have liquid in there you want to get it out asap.I don't think either way will cause any damageHow bad is debris in the engine? Do it yourself spark plug change gone bad ...?You mean it fell through the spark plug hole into the cylinder? if that's all it was, a little fluid and a leaf, don't worry. There is no problem.

Getting engine coolant back in my motor?

I recently had to change a head on my truck and then changed the intake. doing this I lost alot of coolant, my motor is all back together, so how can I make sure when I pour more coolant in that I wont have air pockets in the hoses and motor?Getting engine coolant back in my motor? The air pocket that is most common when refilling an empty coolant system will be in the heater core. After you fill the system with all that it can hold before running the engine, start the engine and run the defroster. This will keep the air from heating up and creating back pressure in the system that causes the coolant not to flow OR if you really want to make sure there is no air in the system, you can remove the thermostat and housing(given that it is on top of the engine) and pour in coolant until you see it come out of the manifold. Then when the coolant comes out,re-install the thermostat and your ready to go. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?

I have coolant leaking out and i'm pretty sure now that it is the water pump. Question can water pumps leak even if the cars not running?Like a steady drip every two seconds? Forming a decent puddle after awhile, but when running the pump is'nt making any abnormal noises is that normal? Is there other clues to positively know the pump is bad? I cant believe how hard a job it looks like it would be to replace it there is no room! Anybody with some helpful how to's? how about an estimate on how much a shop would charge to do it?How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?Put a jack under the oil pan with a 2x4 between the pan and the jack face. You will have to take the serpentine belt loose, the idler is below the power steering pump, and then support the engine on the jack and remove the passenger side motor mount. There is an aluminium L-shaped bracket to remove and then a cast iron piece with 4 bolts holding it to the engine. Remove also the alternator, as it will get in the way. Once the motor mount is out you can remove the serpentine belt. Now you will need to remove the bolts holding the stamped serpentine pulley to the water pump, I believe there are 4 of them and I think they are 8 mm. You cannot, however, take the pulley out until the water pump is off. So now you have to take the bolts out of the water pump and pull it out, clean the mating surface for the new pump, and reinstall, just make sure to put the serpentine pulley over the water pump before you try to put the pump back in.

On a side note, before you go apeshit with all of this, pull the iginition module and coil pack mounting bracket off the front of the engine and check the bypass hose to see if it has a hole in it before you go right to the water pump. I had this go on the wife's car, and overzealous idiot that I am, I just assumed it was a water pump. Several hours, busted knuckles, and beers later, I discovered that it was a bad hose that cost me 6 bucks and took 15 minutes to install, not the 40 dollar water pump. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?Yes, water pump seals will leak all the time (worse when under pressure). It is not a hard job if you now what your doing. Get a repair manual and make sure you have all the right tools and parts before you start. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?http://www.automotiveforums.com/How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?A repair shop will charge about $200 to fix that problem. If you have a jack and a jack stand the lack of room wont be much of a problem anymore. It only a matter of getting the belt covers and timing covers off, and the water pump pully off. The pully can be tricky. since It is a car '92 and younger you may have a problem with a gear slipping and the motor needing timed. If your paticular car needs timed by the belts and pullys, then no problem line up the notches in the gears as they go. But if the timing is off by the valves, Then your in for a long night of work and slight frustration.

If you dont really know what you are doing at all, Then don't bother with it, leave it up to the pros, so that your car actually runs when the pump is put in. It took me 8 hours to fix one in a '99 honda CivicHow hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?Go to parts store get CHILTONS manual for your car. Biggest problem is ,usually, find the proper bolts to remove.

Not too big a chore really. Be sure all old gasket material is removed from the engine where the new pump wiil seal.

Do not turn the water pump shaft on the new pump any more than necessary, they have a mechanical seal that can be damaged.

Probably a four hour job for the inexperienced.

If it's necessary to pull radiator the book will tell you, that would add a couple hours. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?I have a 94 grand am with the 3.1 v6 and really it's an easy job, it looks harder than it is. How to know whats the source of coolant leak?

The water pump is easy to see and determine if its shaft bearings were bad. Same with the thermostat, its an internal part, why in the heck would he want to change that? If you have absolutely no outward signs of a leak then you have a more serious problem as 99% of the time it represents a bad head gasket. How to know whats the source of coolant leak?you could get some uv coolant dye and put it in the radiator and then a leak would light up under a black light. How to know whats the source of coolant leak?Change mechanic for starters. • How to change a themostat on a 1991 Ford van?

The radiator is filled with coolant, but the van runs hot.How to change a themostat on a 1991 Ford van?To begin, you should make sure that it is the thermostat, since there are a couple of other problems that can give you the same symptoms. To diagnose the problem yourself, you must have a general knowledge of how the system works. There are 2 necessary steps that must be accomplished to cool the engine. 1. Water flow 2. Water cooling. The thermostat affects the water flow, by regulating it to a particular temperature. The water pump also affects the flow by propeling the water throught the system. One other factor affecting flow is the radiator if it is extremely dirty inside. This will slow the flow of water. The cooling of the water is affected by the amount of air being drawn across the cooling fins of the radiator, and the heat of the air. In other words, you need to find out if you have water flowing through the system when it is at or above normal temperature. If so, do you have air flowing across the cooling fins of the radiator. It could also be a combination of 2 or more things. For example, your radiator is slightly stopped up, and slowing the flow of the water, but with an outside temperature of 75 degrees, the air flowing across the radiator will still keep the temp below 200. Now given that it is now summer, you add the extra strain of running the A/C, plus the outside air is 100 degrees, plus it is now running through a hot A/C condenser before it even gets to the radiator, now it overheats. Just saying make sure before you do it because vans are not fun to work on anyway. How to change a themostat on a 1991 Ford van?You should go to www.autozone.com and click repair guides, if you want the right information it will tell you how to do the jobs.

Maintenence on a car with over 100,000 miles?

I get my oil changed regularly. Any other simple maintenance things that will save me money in the long run? How often for a tune-up? How often to change the air and fuel filter? And what about a coolant flush/transmission fluid change? I'm hoping that some easy cheaper things will save me big bucks in the long run.Maintenence on a car with over 100,000 miles?Check the owner's manual for scheduled maintenance. You don't mention make, model, or year, but if the engine uses a timing belt there will be a replacement interval for it. many engines will be seriously damaged if the timing belt fails and typical replacement intervals are around 100K miles. Look up your car in the first source to be sure - if it is not listed you have a timing chain; if it is listed and has an asterisk the engine will be damaged if it fails.

This is a good time to review the intervals for coolant and transmission fluid change. Neglecting those can lead to big expense eventually. Also get the hoses checked and replace any hardened or bulging ones. Hose failure can cause serious overheating, which often warps the cylinder head(s) and causes the head gaskets to fail... big money.Maintenence on a car with over 100,000 miles? It depends, somewhat, on the age and condition of your vehicle. Late model cars with modern high voltage electronic ignitions, platinum spark plugs, and fuel injected engines, dynamically %26quot;tune%26quot; themselves, to a great degree, and the reduction of moving parts, and better materials mean you may only need to replace your plugs and spark plug wires every 60,000 or so miles.

Older cars, from the 70s and early 80s, often had semi-mechanical ignitions and fuel metering systems, with a rotating spark distributor and mechanical ignition points, as well as a carburetor for mixing fuel and air, all of which needed much more frequent adjustment and/or replacement, perhaps as often as every 10,000 to 12,000 miles. Follow your owner's manual service recommendations, for the type of driving that you do.Maintenence on a car with over 100,000 miles? The older type cars also had a little mechanical device to adjust the air gas mixture when the car isn't moving so the car doesn't stall which seems to be the subject of another question - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index; Most older type cars need smogging when they have a lot of miles on them. If you don't have a car that dynamically smogs itself then you should figure out a way to do that. Then you could smog it even if it doesn't need smogging which typically improves the performance.Maintenence on a car with over 100,000 miles?Check here for a maintenance schedule:

  • How often should you get your trans and coolant flushed in your car?

I've got a '03 Ford Focus LX with 60 + K miles on it. Also, I've seen transmission flushes with and without a filter change. Isn't it necessary to get your filter changed? How often should you get your trans and coolant flushed in your car?Every two years is a good interval and here's why. Most people will drive 20-30,000 miles in two years.

    1. The anti-corrosion compounds in the coolant break down and the metal (steel and aluminum) in the coolant jacket will start to corrode and the metal becomes suspended in the coolant and you will be able to measure voltage in the coolant if you stick a voltmeter in the coolant and touch the ground to the frame or body. This is stray voltage that is abnormal. Part of the cooling system maintenance is a visual inspection of the hoses and radiator, too. Since your heater core and radiator and head gasket are more expensive than scheduled coolant service, it is a good investment.

    2. The transmission on a front wheel drive is often called a transaxle since there is the typical transmission and differential gears all in one assembly. There is typical gear wear and bearing wear inside the tranny and the metal becomes suspended in the fluid and will get pulled into the big donut magnet in the pan and the filter. Not all of the metal is filtered out since bearing wear and tear creates microscopic non-magnetic particles. So the only way to get it out is to change the fluid.

    3. All maintenance is based on operating hours and not mileage. I do not recommend that you push any car to 100,000 miles before doing some routine maintenance to the powersteering and transmission. A car driven around town will have many more operating hours per mile driven than a car driven on the highway. Same goes for spark plugs.

    4. The car you are driving has the catalytic convertor attached to the exhaust manifold in front of the engine. The heat from this cat convertor flows backwards under the oil pan and transmission housing and powersteering rack. This heat is extreme and will make these fluids run hotter than a typical car where the cat convertor is behind the engine under the car.

Excessive heat, in general, is bad and makes the fluids deteriorate faster. This is why there are so many coolers like transmission fluid coolers and oil coolers and even powersteering fluid coolers added to many cars.

This is a well designed car and is safe but as with most newer vehicles the service intervals recommended in the owners are for light use and average assumptions of hours of operation before service. This is the bare minimum unless you plan to get rid of the car before you hit the maximum recommended miles driven and not spend any money on these routine scheduled services.

Good Luck! How often should you get your trans and coolant flushed in your car?Depends on a vehicle. In you car's manual, you should find the maintenance shuttle.

Whenever I change a fluid I change the filter except for gas.

Good luck! How often should you get your trans and coolant flushed in your car?60k you are do to get them done. Some cars dont have a changable filter for trans anymore and the manufacturer will recommend just flushingHow often should you get your trans and coolant flushed in your car?It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Check your owner's manual or with the dealer. It's cheap insurance, especially for the transmission. It will usually cost $250-300 just to remove the transmission and diagnose the problem.

    How much to change waterpump?

I was told I need to change my timing belt, fan belt and waterpump.

My waterpump is broken and has leaked coolant all over the belts.

They quoted me $680 (Canadian) Is this too high?

Also I have a warranty that covers engine, transmission and seals and gaskets?

Would any of this be included in the warranty? How much to change waterpump?People always recommend changing the belt if changing the water pump and vice versa. However, if your belt is good, you don't need to pull it off and replace it. This is a lot of extra work and timing belts are not all that cheap either, usually around $60 plus the extra hour or 2 more labor to pull it off, put on the new one and align it correctly. Most bozos will never align it correctly with the camshaft rotors, and this leads to timing problems and ultimately engine problems. If all you need is the water pump, just loosen the timing belt and replace the water pump. Then tighten the belt. This will maintain your timing to factory settings and save you a lot of hassle. How much to change waterpump?I would think it would be covered, well the water pump at least. But if the damage to the belts was caused by the waterpump, then yes your warranty should cover it all.How much to change waterpump?Taking into account the exchange rate, it sounds about right. The main problem was the leaking water pump that seems to have caused the rest of the problems. I don't know if the water pump would be covered or not, ask.How much to change waterpump?Water pump is not covered, But you didnt mention the make of car,So it could be that much then again, that sounds pretty steep for a water pump and timing belt job.How much to change waterpump? The Timing belt is considered maintance. So it is not under warranty.

$680 Canadian is an OK price.

Since most front wheel drive cars have the timing belt and water pump close together it makes sense to do them at the same time. The Pump %26amp; Belt are not expensive. Getting to them is. The fan belts are fairly cheap and easy to do but since they are coming off any way replace them to.How much to change waterpump?Depends on when you go an if you have the part about $80 dollarsHow much to change waterpump?the price for that service is high because of the labor involved in accessing the timing belt and water pump. if your water pump specifically is covered by your warranty then all you should have to pay for is the price of the belts. the timing belt has to be removed to gain access to the WP so if they are gonna cover water pump replacement then belts are the only expense you should have.

but it sounds to me as though you have what is called a powertrain warranty, which covers only engine and transmission and normally takes effect after your bumper to bumper warranty expires. this will not cover the WP as it is not considered part of the engine (even though it's bolted to it). on my car it takes about 6 hours to change the timing belt, and at dealer labor rates that's about $600. so the price seems fair. just make sure that the mechanic returns to you all the old parts, including belts, just as a way of checking to make sure the work was performed properly. and make sure they replace your timing belt...How much to change waterpump? The average life span of a timing belt should be around 80,000 to100,000 km for Japanese cars, and about 50,000 to 60,000 km for a Korean models. For continental cars, in between the 2 makes.

Normal a water pump, under normal usage, will be gone at around 60,000 to 80,000 km thus it is a common for the mechanic to suggest to you to replace both at the same time, even it is still running. Proactive is always better than reactive, just imagine how inconvenient you are now in. In fact, you are saving some money for getting both parts replace together.

For replacement of the fan belt - not critical if it is properly tensioned, proper condition and spin without making any sharp noise.

Every parts of the engine is subjected to fair wear and tear - you should be covered for the replacement of the water pump and timing belt, but not the fan-belt (external mounted).

If covered by warranty, go to the authorised agents for service (further warranty for the parts replaced and workmanship)!

    Happy Driving!!!!

How do I know if i need to change my piston rings?

It looks like my coolant has oil in it, it is a rusty color... White smoke also comes out of my exhaust. .... Are these signs of bad piston rings? If so how would u change them on a 97 3.8l camaro? And about how long would it take one person to change them? How do I know if i need to change my piston rings?white smoke is water in the combustion chamber and is a usual sign of a blown head gasket, not the rings

if the smoke was blue then the rings or valve seals would be the cause

if there is water in the oil, it tends to wash out the main and rod and camshaft bearings.

any kind of repair like this should be done by a pro, for if this is something you have never done, it could be compared to a medical student performing open heart surgery.

Mysuggestion is take the car to a shop and have a block test done. What it does is checks for emissions(burnt gas and air)that are in the coolant. You most likely have a blown head gasket, and the bearing issues I mentioned dont happen in all cases, but be prepared for it. T he mechanic would be able to diagnose and tell by first doing the block check, and then could change the oil and filter to find a knock if one is there, for it will not show this until fresh oil is put in

The rusty water is from the rusty water in your radiatorHow do I know if i need to change my piston rings?1. Low compression on all cylinders.

    2. Lots of %26quot;blow by%26quot; oil (on the pcv tubes)

    3. Car uses lots of oil.How do I know if i need to change my piston rings?no that,s a sign the head gasket or intake leaking.

Worn piston rings would not cause the oil to mix with the coolant and the smoke would be blue.

The amount of time it would take to change them would vary a lot based on your skills and tools available. It is a lot of work. How do I know if i need to change my piston rings?you would have to take the whole block apart, it could also be your valves. most likely to get and engine rebuilt thats over $1000How do I know if i need to change my piston rings?head gasketsHow do I know if i need to change my piston rings?Sounds like your valves are shot, not your piston rings. How do I know if i need to change my piston rings?1st, changing rings requires dis-assembly of the whole engine. It's crazy to tear down an engine and replace only the rings.

2nd, like others said, it sounds like your problem isn't rings, but expensive repairs are in order.

3rd, do not attempt major repairs by yourself if you don't know what you're doing. It can end up costing you a LOT more money in the end.How do I know if i need to change my piston rings? It's not rings. Rings leaks compression and oil

Theres no coolant in the chambers to leak into the oil through rings.

Sounds more like a blown/leaking intake gasket or head gasket.. Also a cracked intake, head or block would do the same
