How do I change my thermostat in my '05 Impala 3.4 V6..I changed the water pump so I need the thermostat info
Hot Coolant Temp light came on. So when I turned the heat on full blast, nothing but cool air came out. If I'm not mistaken that means the thermostat needs to be replaced. She was leaking fluid, but I changed the water pump and that stopped. Soooo, any help I can receive will be greatly appreciated. How do I change my thermostat in my '05 Impala 3.4 V6..I changed the water pump so I need the thermostat infoOn this type engine (3.4) the coolant system has to be bleed while refilling with replacement coolant. How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?
I'm in the midst of changing out a bad thermostat on my 1996 2.2 ltr 4cyl Pontiac Sunfire... I've found the housing for the thermostat and am ready to go as long as I can find out how to drain the existing coolant from the engine.
How do I do it?
Thank you for any help you can give me.How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?You're going to get some spillage no matter what you do, but you really have to drain all the coolant out of the engine AND the radiator to keep from having a huge mess. Most GM cars have a drain cock on the bottom of the radiator, but unfortunately, they usually get stuck and are made out of plastic, so there's a good chance you'll break it if you try to force it. The easiest way to get the coolant out is to loosen the clamp on the hose that goes to the bottom of the radiator and pull the hose off. You'll need a large pan to get all the coolant, and it is going to splatter, but it's really the most efficient way. Good luck! How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?You need to drain the radiator from the bottom using the petcock valve .... look hard enough and you'll find it.How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?There should be a drain plug in your radiator which this will be located at the very bottom of it. When you drain it make sure that you catch the fluid in some type of container. Coolant is very poisonest to the environment as well as animals since it smells and tastes sweet to them. It is a very sad thing to see this type of poisoning in an animal. Causes convulsions, nerological damage, froathing at the mouth, and so on. So please keep this in mind when doing this. How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?i dont think these newer cars have a petcock drain in the radiator i know mine dont its a 92 you just have to take off bottom radiator hose that should do for changing the thermostat. How do I drain the coolant in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2?I agree with Michael G, I believe those vehicles drained by removing the lower radiator hose.

1997 Jetta Easiest way to get to and change the Thermostat? Also ECT Specs?
2.0L 5 Speed. with A/C. The thermostat is on the bottom side of the waterpump and is blocked by the Alternator and A/C unit. Is there a mechanic out there than can tell me the easiest way to get to the thermostat. I'm only a little mechanically inclined. :) I do have the Chiltons manual but it doesn't say how to get to the Thermostat. I have replaced Thermostats before in my toyoto... very easy! Also i need to test the Coolant Temp Sensor(ECT), what spec readings should I be getting? It is a four terminal connector.
Thanks, Tanya1997 Jetta Easiest way to get to and change the Thermostat? Also ECT Specs?Volkswagen has a problem with the water pump impeller falling off causing overheating, running hot, no circulation, cooling fan not kicking on. If this might be your problem you can see the water pump impeller after removing the thermostat. To get the thermostat you need a 1/4%26quot; drive 8mm or 10mm socket with a 1/4%26quot; drive wobble socket. This may require removing the alternator on some models. Hope this helps.

BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement?
My 2003 BMW 325i has not been heating up properly for a few weeks now. The temperature gauge starts to move towards warm, but then falls back down to cold, and no matter what temperature I set the heat to, it continues to blow cold air. I had an oil change today, and had my coolant topped up, but the problem remains. Will I need to replace my thermostat, and if so how expensive is it?BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement? If your thermostat is stuck open your car will almost never warm up. My buddy has this problem so for now he covers his radiator (about 2/3) with a cardboard. It doesn't completely solve his problem but it get his car (a) going (b) slightly warmer for heating
If this works for you then you definitely have stuck thermostat.

Usually thermostat can be done in 1 hour labor.
You have a BMW and the cost is probably more (more stuff to remove and re-install). I know everything cost more on my audi.
If you go to your dealer, don't say %26quot;I want my thermostat replaced%26quot;. They will replace it whether you need it or not. Tell them what is wrong and let them decide if it is the thermostat.
Good Luck
P.S. NEVER top off with water. It will freeze and crack your engine block. At best, it will freeze inside your heater core (the part that warms up your cab) and will never blow warm air.BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement? This most certainly sounds like your thermostat. Not only is it an easy fix with basic tools, it is cheap as well. Perhaps one of the least expensive things to fix on a BMW. Try Autohaus AZ for OEM replacement parts and do the job yourself! They have helped me many times and now have the satisfaction of doing service on my car for much less than taking it to the shop. Visit their website here: http://www.autohausaz.com
Your thermostat is located on the top right side of the engine block, just below the valve cover. If you follow the intake hose from your radiator, it will go to a metal housing on the engine block. It is in that housing that you will find the thermostat. Should be a 13 or 15 mm allen bolt (two of them). Make sure to scrape the housing clear of any remaining gasket material and don't forget to install the new gasket. One should come with the thermostat kit. All in all you will probably only spend $30 to replace this. Your car will actually run better and your heater will now work. Sure beats spending over $200 for the repair at a BMW shop.
Hope this info helps and good luck servicing your car.
Just love the BMW in-line 6..... easy to work on and lasts FOREVER!BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement?you will need to see a mechanic it is a common fault on one of the bmw models , the thermostat is electriclal and water gets in the connections [design fault]BMW 3 Series Thermostat replacement? It depends if the 2003 325i has an electric fan or a viscous coupling fan (ie; engine powered fan).
My 2000 323ci has a viscous coupling fan and that has to be removed in order to access the thermostat. I had to get some loaner tools from Autozone to undo the fan.
If your car has an electric fan, then it's a lot easier.
bavauto.com has the parts. The thermostat runs for about $60 I believe (just check it out at www.bavauto.com).
You might as well also do a complete coolant (antifreeze) change as well since removing the thermostat will cause some loss of coolant anyway. So instead of just topping it up, drain it (plastic drain valve located bottom corner of radiator), stick a garden hose into the system (with thermostat removed) and finally install new thermostat and refill it.
You may use either distilled water with BMW coolant or try the %26quot;waterless%26quot; coolant from bavauto.
If you want the dealer to fix this, they will most likely charge you 1 to 1.5 hour of labor for this job. But everything will be marked up considerably - including parts and supplies...etc.

Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?
Hello, I own a 2001 mazda protege and the temperature gauge has been acting up. I have recently changed the water pump and timing belt as well as changed the oil and added new coolant. But after driving for about five or ten minutes, the temperature gauge gets very hot. And recently, it reached the max and the coolant began to boil. I have been too afraid to drive it around. Any suggestions why this happens and how I should go about fixing this problem? Thanks.Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?Check your thermostat. If it isn't working then your car will overheat. It doesn't sound like a fan because it is overheating too fast. Also when you fill the coolant up in the radiator it is best to do it while the vehicle is running. Leave the cap off and when the car warms up it will cycle the radiator fluid into the engine and give you a chance to fill the radiator up some more. A lot of times people do not do this and it leaves the engine empty of fluid and the radiator full making it harder for the car to cool down or even leaving air pockets that can cause overheating. Also if you pull the thermostat out and boil it in some water when the water starts to boil it should pop open if not then it needs to be replaced.Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?Did you bleed the air out of the system when you refilled it ?Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?Yea I have advise and that is replace the radiator and thermostat and stop putting tap water in the damn thing! Only use distilled water with the radiator fluid and don't buy the premix shitttt! Tap water has lime deposits in it and they collect around the radiator vents at the top and plug it up to where the fluid can't flow freely through it and it over heats and also it collects around the thermostat and it will stop working and quickly over heat the car and you have to replace it and the distilled water and radiator fluid that you put in will stop this from ever happening again! Once again! NO TAP WATER! Got me? Good luck with that! If you over heat it too much you will blow a head gasket and the oil and water will mix in the oil pan or the radiator or run into one of the cylinders and lock up the engine! Get it fixed!Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions? All being well as far as the cooling system is concerned. Then I will almost guarantee that the fan sensor is not allowing the fan to cool off the rad . Possibly the fan may also be stuck and the power not making it run. I really think it is fan related.Fish name of children
How much does it cost to change water pump in 1997 Chevy Malibu v4, 2.4L?
I live in Seattle WA and the car has 105k miles on it. the coolant starts to leak and checked with few mechanic and diagnosed that water put has to be replaced. their estimations were outrageous and i wanna make sure i don't get ripped off. can anyway give me a true estimation,How much does it cost to change water pump in 1997 Chevy Malibu v4, 2.4L?call three local shops get three prices of their work
will get a better ideal
and heres a price estimatorHow much does it cost to change water pump in 1997 Chevy Malibu v4, 2.4L?Don't know about that model but a water pump is usually an unbolt, replace and tighten bolts operation - 15 minutes. the pump itself is low tech and fairly cheap. You're probably looking at $100.

1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this?
Recently aquired car ( see last weeks question! ). This problem was highlighted to me, before purchase, as follows; consistent loss of coolant but no visible leaks, no change on the temp. guage, no change in performance. On long journeys very slight steaming visible when stationary. A mechanic advised previous owner that it is v. likely a gasket failure at the bottom of the cylinders, where they meet in their ' V ' configuration - %26quot; not a difficult fix %26quot;. Does this fit in with anyone else's experience of these V8's? Could it be a DIY job? Thanks in advance.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this?If you are thinking of doing something like this, don't. Just take it to a garage and they can sort it out. If they don't fix the problem you can take it back to them saying, you haven't fixed it, fix it. Whereas if you did it yourself you could totally screw it up and it may not even drive once you have done it.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this?IF YOUR MECHANICALLY INCLINED.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this? It's so easy to damage parts of the engine when putting it all together. You would have to follow the directions to the letter. Everything would have to be re-torqued properly. Yes it can be done but like I said. There could be some great difficulties and road blocks.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this? You really, really have to know what your doing to DIY it is no easy fix you have to take the top off the engine and get the heads shaved before you put it back together.1994 BMW 540 - coolant loss - how big a job is this? Before you start tearing a %26quot;V%26quot; apart,a big job,get a couple of tests done.First is a reactive coolant test, this is a liquid that changes colour from blue to green if there is any combustion gases in the coolant,it's definative.Second would be a coolant pressure test, the whole coolant system is pressurised up to 15-20 psi,and believe me,if any micro holes are present,it'll shoot out.You can buy the coolant reactive dye tester from Amazon.
