Advice/guide for flushing anti-freeze/coolant for car?

Lately I've been having trouble with the check engine light going at slow speed for extended periods of time. I feel this is because the car is overheating so I check the coolant level and find it's not anywhere near the %26quot;cold%26quot; level. So I figure it's time to fix this. The car is 17 years old with 72K Mi on it and probably hasn't had it changed ever (same with the transmission fluid).

I've read the bottle on the (pre-mixed, 50/50) anti-freeze I purchased. It says (roughly) drain the current coolant, load with water, run the car with the heater at maximum power for 10 minutes, turn off, drain water, load new anti-freeze. Is this accurate? Should I use straight tap, filtered or distiled water? Typicaly how well labled is the coolant plug? Thanks.Advice/guide for flushing anti-freeze/coolant for car?Hello what you need to do is get the hose out and put the one end in the top radiator and open the drain plug (should be bottom left (depending on the car) open it all the way run the car with the water running once the car reaches normal operating temp ( and for the thermostat to open) and you should see a clear flow of water then you can cut the car off and let the water run out that way you know your motor is cleaned out of anti freeze. then make sure you re-tighten your drain plug and put the proper antifreeze into your car. check with parts people (some cars call for green, orange etc..) the plug is sometimes a butterfly or a screw look for your radiator@ http://www.radiators.com/ and you shoud see what the plug looks like and where it's located... good luckAdvice/guide for flushing anti-freeze/coolant for car? What kind of car?

You can usually either find a cap on the radiator - or on a lot of newer cars, you add fluid directly to the overflow (where you see the 'cold and hot' levels).

If it is a chrysler - like an LHS or Intrepid, you will have to bleed the cooling system when you get it filled back up - after refilling it, drive the car until it gets warm, and you will see a little bleeder screw at the top of the engine - loosen it, and steam will come out, wait until fluid starts coming out solid - and then tighten it back again. (There might be other cars that require this too - it's very stupid...)

Find the drain - usually at the bottom of the radiator (make sure the car is cool when you do this. Drain the coolant out, and then close the drain - get some radiator flush and mix it with water as indicated on the directions, run the motor, then drain it.

Fill up with 50/50 coolant and water - either premix or make your own.

You should probably change your thermostat (location depends on car) since it is probably pretty funky by now.Advice/guide for flushing anti-freeze/coolant for car?Go to the parts store and buy a flush kit and a bottle of flush and follow the instructions.

  • I just bought a 2010 subaru outback. How long can I expect it to last without any problems and repairs?

I drive about 1000 to 1200 miles a month and the only maintenance i get done is oil change and once a month i check tire pressure. I do not ever open the hood to see coolant or oil level.

With such lifestyle, how long can i expect it to last?I just bought a 2010 subaru outback. How long can I expect it to last without any problems and repairs?Im pretty sure you got some warranty on it. If I were you, anything that comes up, I would make them fix it asap. As for how long it's going to last Is a matter of how you take care of and maintenance it. Also, it's luck. Some people can treat their cars like babies and still have problems. But for now, you should be fine.I just bought a 2010 subaru outback. How long can I expect it to last without any problems and repairs?ok here is god tips for maintenance

i highly recomend mobil1 cause i seen the diffrence in my own car and also u can change it at 5000 miles is really safe and the filter at every other oil change .

    at every 12000 mile

    change the air filter

    fuel filter

    rotate the tire

    at every 24000 mile

change the trans fluid ( machine flush )

antifreeze coolant fluid ( flush )

    thermostate

    Gear oil

those should be your main maintenace first .every 10 days check all the fluid level and when u see any leak just fix it right away . trust me any car would last 300 thousand miles easy . and for tune up change the spark plugs every 50000 miles and wires at 100000 miles.

and if ur catalic converter get old , leaky , or clog just let them cut it and put a flex pipe

if the car overheat just shut it off as sson as posible this is trhe main problems when a car overheat everything would start going bad , and as sson as u hear noises even if it go away for a minute or maybe couples days it would cause problems later on .so have it check right away .

tie rod , ball joint , should last u every 3 years if u drive it smoothly ,

shock can go up to 150000 miles

other then that dont spend money on cars etc, just keep the fluids clean as much as possible . espacially engine oil and trans fluids, other can wait few miles f ur low on money

What is happening to the coolant (98chev malibu)?

So mom's 98 Malibu (4cyl 2.4L) leaks coolant but weirdly. 1st of all, I do find coolant on the floor under the car but cannot find where its coming from. The reservoir's level keeps dropping down, I'll fill it up and 10days later its low again. I took the car to 3 different professional mechanic shops and they did a pressure test but during the pressure test mysteriously not a single drop of coolant leaked. However, every now and then i'll find coolant on the ground and reservoir's levels dropped. One of the mechanics suggested I change the reservoir's cap, I did that and still the coolant keeps leaking and still no signs to where the leak is coming from.

The engine has not overheated yet nor showed the signs of any problems.

So, what do u think could be going on, and how do i solve that.

thanks for readingWhat is happening to the coolant (98chev malibu)? The only way an engine loses coolant is by a leaking hose, a leaking water pump, hole in the radiator, a leaking head gasket, (which will cause performance problems), or a leaking freeze plug. Try to determine where you see the leak on the ground and look up in the engine while the car is still parked above the leak. See if it is leaking from the front or rear of engine. This will help you narrow down some of the components i just told you about. A crack in the intake manifold is another area of leaks , but this is very rare.

good luck...What is happening to the coolant (98chev malibu)?the design of the upper intake gasket on that car is defective. it will keep leaking until you have it replaced. (cost me $400 to get mine done) if you decide to keep the car, you will have to get it replaced again because gm didn't fix the problem. What is happening to the coolant (98chev malibu)?it may be a head gasket. i can't believe 3 mechanics can't find the problem. what they need to do is drain the coolant system and pressurize it with air or put a dye in the coolant and find it that wayWhat is happening to the coolant (98chev malibu)?lets hope it,s not what i,am thinking. i,am thinking it might be a hole in the transmission cooler on the radiator and the coolant is mixing with the transmission fluid.i don,t know if that,s what it is but it would,nt hurt to mention it to the mechanic.

Antifreeze/coolant leak out of head gasket?

Does anyone know how much it cost to change a head gasket in a 94 3.1L V6 berreta Z26Antifreeze/coolant leak out of head gasket? Most of the time it is the intake gaskets that are leaking, unless you ran it hot. Then you may have headgasket leaking also. Intake job is around 6 hours labor with $100 or so in parts.

Headgaskets would be 13 hours plus parts.Antifreeze/coolant leak out of head gasket? Are you sure its not just the rocker cover (rubber seal under the gasket?) You could DIY that job.

A head gasket is not expensive (for the parts) it all comes down to labour costs which vary depending on the garage.Antifreeze/coolant leak out of head gasket?let say $350.00 us dollars.more or less.

How to change oil - 2001 Buick LeSabre?

I am trying to cut back on spending money, and I figured changing my own oil would be a great help. My only problem is, of course, how do I do this? I know I have to get underneath the car, that's.... not TOO much a problem, I think I fit decently under it, but after that, what do I look for, some kind of thing you unscrew and hope it doesnt spill all over me?

I drive a 2001 Buick LeSabre, if that helps. I already checked the dipstick, so I know I definitely need to change that out. Also, when it comes to checking my engine coolant/antifreeze, how do I know when to fill it or what?

ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to start maintaining my car on my own, but I need a point in the right direction. Thanks! How to change oil - 2001 Buick LeSabre?First, secure the vehicle safely! I do not recommend using the cars own tire jack as a sole means of support. A pair of axle stands or steel ramps work best. When using ramps, block the rear wheels, put it in park and set the emergency brake if so equipped.

    Tools Required:

    - a worklight, gloves and eye protection

    - an oil filter wrench

    - a socket and ratchet that fits the oil pan drain plug snugly

    - a shallow pan capable of holding up to 10 litres of used oil

    - shop rags, a pair of rubber gloves

    - your choice of motor oil and a new oil filter

    - a way to raise and support the vehicle safely and securely

If the vehicle is cold, run the vehicle for a few minutes to 'warm' the oil, it will allow the oil to drain faster.

Remove the oil filler cap located on top of the engine. Place the shallow pan beneath the oil pan under the car and locate the oil pan drain plug bolt. The bolt or drain plug is generally a large hex-shaped bolt that threads into the oil pan. The engine oil pan is affixed to and located directly beneath the engine.

You will need a snug fitting socket or you run the risk of stripping the drain plug bolt. Unscrew the bolt until you start to see small drips appearing, position the pan, as the oil will stream out. Allow the plug to drop into the shallow pan for now. Allow the oil pan to fully drain and move to the front of the vehicle.

Locate the oil filter and use the oil filter wrench to remove it, be careful as the oil filter is full of oil! Remove the oil filter and empty the oil into the shallow pan and discard the filter.

Grab the new filter and apply a thin coating of oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter. Fill the new filter about half full with fresh motor oil and set aside. Take your shop rags and thoroughly clean the the oil filter adapter (located on the engine) till it looks clean and free of any oil and install the new filter.

Be careful when threading the oil filter on to the oil filter adapter, especially if its on an angle, the filter should thread easily with little resistance. Hand tighten only, do not use the filter wrench to tighten the filter. The filter should sit flush with the adapter, wipe any excess oil with rags.

By now, the engine should be drained of oil, pull the shallow pan out and put on a pair of rubber gloves. Locate the drain plug and clean it with a rag. There maybe a small plastic seal, keep that as well. Set the old oil aside and carefully thread the drain plug bolt and seal back into the engine oil pan by hand, this will avoid cross-threading the bolt. Tighten with ratchet but don't use an excessive amount of force to tighten this bolt, just make sure it is snug.

Lower the vehicle. Follow manufacturers specifications when filling the engine with fresh motor oil. An old one litre bottle cut in half can be used as a funnel if need be.

DO NOT overfill, check the dipstick wipe and check again. Once you have filled the engine with oil replace the oil filler cap tightly and start the engine. Check for leaks around the filter and oil drain plug area, if no leaks, you're good to go. Pour the used oil into the containers you purchased the new oil in and take it to your local garage and they will recycle it for you.

    COOLANT

There are coolant level indicators usually located on the side of the coolant reservoir. Usually labelled COLD - HOT or ADD - FULL If your coolant level is BELOW the COLD or ADD mark, you'll need to add coolant.

    TRANSMISSION FLUID

There's a dipstick near the back of that engine, usually with a red handle. Check transmission fluid when the vehicle is running and at operating temperature. Check the fluids color, it should be pink and free of dirt or any other particles. It should not smell burnt.

If the fluid is very dark, you might consider installing a new transmission filter the same day you decide to do the oil change. Its a fairly simple install, just be careful not to warp the transmission pan by over-torquing the pan bolts. Prior to remounting the transmission pan. Apply a thin bead of O2-sensor friendly RTV sealant to the mating surface of the transmission pan, this helps keep the transmission pan gasket in place during reassembly and forms a good seal.

You might want to print this off.

How would I replace or fix my water pump in my Chrysler Le Baron?

The coolant in my '92 Le Baron is leaking, so I may have to change or replace my water pump.., any ideas? How would I replace or fix my water pump in my Chrysler Le Baron?Check your hoses first, changing out a water pump on a LeBaron is time consuming. You don't say what engine is in place so I'm going to assume it is the 3.0 V-6.

First go to your auto parts store and purchase a Haynes manual for your LeBaron for approximately $16.00, go to the appropriate engine section and read up on changing the water pump. You will find it is quite a job and may be more than you want to tackle, but the money spent first will tell you whether or not you want to attempt the job before you get halfway through it and decide it is not something you wish to complete.

And there is plenty of info in the manual for other repairs, one repair made by you and the book has paid for itself. How would I replace or fix my water pump in my Chrysler Le Baron? You take it out and replace with new. In the process you might have to remove radiator, drive belt, several pulleys to get to the pump. How would I replace or fix my water pump in my Chrysler Le Baron?Buy pump, throw in trunk. sell car. buy 1995 honda civic. How would I replace or fix my water pump in my Chrysler Le Baron?first be sure it is the pump that is leaking and not just a hose!!! I have seen the hoses leak and people brought me there car wanting me to fix the water pump and all it was ..... the hose was wore out and soft by the clamp and had sprung a small leak.... check that first before going all out and changing the water pump!!! also what size moter you have??? 4, 6, ??? makes a bit of a differance!!

also check by the pulley, there is a small like hole in the pump.... see if it has a water type stain on it.... if so then the pump is going bad!!!

How can i get my truck to run COOLER, 10 points for best answer?

My 1993 F-150 5.0L (302ci) V8 runs a little warmer then i would like it to. I often smell a sweet smell near the grill, but theres absolutely NO leaks. So i suspect its just really warm. What can i do to make her run a little cooler? I've already flushed it with new coolant. Im planning on changing the thermostat. What degree should i use to keep it running nice an cool? An what else can i do it keep it cool? How can i get my truck to run COOLER, 10 points for best answer?I increased the cooling efficiency of my car by far using those methods, perhaps one or all would serve your truck:

1- I increased the size of my radiator, increased cooling surface area, increased cooling efficiency.

2- Using only 10% water and 90% pure coolant. The coolant properties not only are more efficient in increasing cooling efficiency, but also prolongs the life of your cooling system by decreasing water corrosion.

3- Adding an external auxiliary water pump to help with coolant circulation.

4- Adding fender vents so incoming air would go through the radiator and leave the engine room, thus increasing cold air flow through the radiator, and dropping the engine room temp.

5- Adding 2 extra frontal cooling fans to blow against the radiator surface.

Hope those tips help you. Good luck. How can i get my truck to run COOLER, 10 points for best answer? You're welcome, glad to be of help.

How can i get my truck to run COOLER, 10 points for best answer?Make sure the fins on the radiator and the AC evap. coil are clean, and the fan shroud is in place. In the old days I would use a 160 degree thermostat, but now that everything is computer controlled, you can't get by with that, because the engine will run rich or idle too fast. Replace coolant?????????

I stop going to auto shop because of quailty they use and it's much cheaper if i do it. I started to change oil and oil filther myself for 6 months. Now how do i replace coolant????? I have 4 cylander toyota 97.Replace coolant?????????Drain the coolant into a tub so you can take it to be recycled or properly disposed of. It is a hazardous material. There is a petcock at the bottom of your radiator. After the coolant has drained, close the petcock and add 50-50 mix of antifreeze/coolant and water in the top of the radiator. Any auto parts store will also have a back flush kit when your ready to tackle that job.Replace coolant?????????first test your coolant strenght , second when did you have it changed last, most likely if you had a water pump, thermostat,or radiator changed withen the last year it it still strong enough. it is easy to do yourself just open the peacock on the radiator let it drain , flush it out and refill it your good to go for the winter . good luck if you have had any of that work done they probaly changed your fluid .Replace coolant?????????To just drain and refill coolant, loosen the fitting(usually called a petcock) at the bottom of the radiator, drain the fluid, and refill with fresh coolant.Replace coolant?????????You will need to drain the system. There is a drain on the radiator. But pulling the lower hose is faster.

Do not drain this in the grass on down a storm drain, like oil it can be recycled. It is also toxic to pets, so do not leave it uncovered.

Then you will need to fill the system. Locate the highest point where there is a hose connection and let the air escape there when filling the system.

A flush kit that includes the fittings to attach a hose can come in handy as this connection when done right can serve a the vent for filling.Replace coolant?????????simple..you need to change coolant every two years..also remember to change your raditor cap as well..you can buy a kit to flush your raditor from preston it self explantory or you can just remove the lower raditor hose and drain out the coolant and flush the system by refilling the raditor with water and then purge the system and filling it with coolant and dont forget to check for air pockets..you can remove air pockets by running the engine with the raditor cap off ..good luck it will be messy..use the right coolant and proper water to coolant ratio..Replace coolant?????????Your vehicle would be fine with a drain and fill you drain it first then the auto parts store sells a kit to hook your garden hose to flush it out.

The coolant recommended should be in your owners manual if your unsure just pick up a couple jugs of premix universal coolant and be done with it.

    Im leaking coolant... 600rr?

its an 05 600rr with 21k miles on it.

Im leaking coolant from the overflow valve (thats what i think it is anyway). Its located on the left side right by the kickstand.

When i gig my oil change about 500 miles ago, i filled up the reserve coolant tank to max line. I checked it today, i was lower than min line.

Why is it leaking, and how can i stop it?Im leaking coolant... 600rr?If you are doing a lot of traffic driving, chances are that your bike is running hot and just pushing the coolant out of the overflow. Just keep an eye on it and make sure you keep it above the minimum line. I've had this happen to me in the past because of overheating. Not a blown head gasket, just doing the job it was designed to do. You can also replace the coolant with another product like %26quot;Redline%26quot; coolant and that could help cool the engine quicker and easier. I use Redline in my race bikes and they cool my engine at least another 10 degrees lower.Im leaking coolant... 600rr?yeah, that isn't very helpful, you don't have coolant in your oil do you?

I've got the same problem, I had to remove all the coolant from my system to go to the track, filled it up to max and now I can't even see any in the reserve. I think it has something to do with the system self bleeding, pushing out air to make room for more coolant, I wouldn't worry about it too much, just keep filling the thing till it stops emptying.

Thats what I did with my mercedez and it doesn't drain any more.Im leaking coolant... 600rr?You have to pressure test the cooling system to determine if %26amp; where there are any leaks.

The reserve tank doesn't have an overflow valve.

Leaking water pump seal - worn relief valve, or non sealing radiator cap - blown head gasket - air pockets are being filled, in the cooling system - cracked and leaking radiator hose.

The problem (if there is one) could be any number of things.

Any automotive or motorcycle shop should have a cooling system pressure tester.Im leaking coolant... 600rr?with that many many miles on a bike, you might have a blown head gasket, but you say the coolant is leaking, so there might be a broken check valve. Worst case scenario, the block is cracked and coolant is leaking into the crankcase. If there is power loss, you might have to replace the piston rings. You need to check your oil for any coolant leakage, and if there is then you need a whole new motor. Check your spark plug and look for if it has been lighting the coolant, if so, you would need a head gasketIm leaking coolant... 600rr?I'd look into changing the valve, they can go bad just like that. Or if you can look around where the valve is and see if there is a crack or anything like that. Also the thermostat might be stuck open as well and using the extra water.Im leaking coolant... 600rr?I think it's th valve - perhaps you could get a manual and look it up.

In my car, the coolant level is below the low line.I need to change it. I am not sure about the previously used coolant(type, color, etc) since I bought recently. Can someone tell me %26quot;Prestone Dex Cool 50/50 Antifreeze extended life%26quot; good for Camry? ...do I need to get pre-mixed one or I need to mix with water...which is best..

also do I need to flush out and re-fill or can I add it with existing level...

Appreciate your response :)Best Coolant(Antifreeze) and how to add for 1997 Toyota Camry LE?There is a label on the radiator or in the owners manual that says what kind of coolant you need. If it's dex cool, then that is what you put in. Do not mix in any other kind with dexcool. It will turn to the consistancy of jello. If you mix it it will clog everything up.The mixture is 1/2 antifreeeze 1/2 water. If you drain the radiator remember to bleed the system. Or your car will heat up. To bleed the system. You put in a gallon of antifreeze and a gallon of water. you run the engine until it gets to operating temperature. Turn off the engine and let it cool down. Then put in another gallon and water. Repeat the process. If you don't bleed it . The hoses will bust or it will mess up the heater core.Best Coolant(Antifreeze) and how to add for 1997 Toyota Camry LE?Why pay for water? First have the system flushed. Then look up the capacity and buy enough for the mechanic to fill it half the way and no more (unless you live in Minn or points north (2 gals of regular Prestone should do it). Heater core going bad, leaking coolant...how long can I drive my car safely until it gets fixed?

My 2002 Chevy Cavalier was leaking coolant and I found out today at the oil change place, it's leaking from the heater core, and it's cracked, meaning that's the problem. I'm only just topping off my car with coolant every 2 days until I am able to get the problem fixed (friday) but is it ok to drive my car around until then, as long as I keep the coolant level up and don't use my heat or air in my car??Heater core going bad, leaking coolant...how long can I drive my car safely until it gets fixed? As long as you don't let your coolant level get too low, you'll be fine to drive it until Friday.Heater core going bad, leaking coolant...how long can I drive my car safely until it gets fixed?keep the heater temp control all the way to cold. the coolant will not flow into the core. check your coolant level.Heater core going bad, leaking coolant...how long can I drive my car safely until it gets fixed? As long as you dont lets your engien run out of, or too low on coolant, it will not effect yoru engine.

Obviously you will be leakign coolant onto your floorboard in yoru car, which is anoying, to stop this, you can bypass your heater core by redoing the hoses that goto it, it fairly simple to do, and the end result will be you will not have heat in your car untill you replace the heater core, and reconnect the hoses.

Its springtime, and you really shoudlnt need your heat for several months, so i thing this is your best option. Also heater cores are very labor intensive to replace.

In the future, change your coolant as recomended by the manufacturer of your vehicle, failure to chang coolant will will result in the insides of your radiator and heater core coroding and cracking, which is most likel;y waht put yoru vehicle in the condition it is in now.Heater core going bad, leaking coolant...how long can I drive my car safely until it gets fixed?Drain the coolant out of the heater core.

Tie off the hoses running to your heater core.

(find the 2 hoses that run to your heater core, there should be an inlet and outlet. Now drain some of your coolant down so it doesnt leak out.

Then pop off ONE of the hoses on your heater core, run a syphon pump thru down into your heater core, drain all the coolant out.

Now take that one hose and tie it to the other Inlet or Outlet of the heatercore....so that its just loope, not running down to your engine.

Now do basically the same thing with your engine, so the hoses ARENT running to the heatercore, so it wont be constantly pumping in coolant. You may need to run to autozone or advanceautoparts to buy a longer piece of hose in order to plug off the Engine Side of it....just make sure to take a piece of hose with you so you get the right diameter hose, also measure how long of hose you will need, then goto the store and they will cut you the right size piece of hose.

Ive seen people do this before, it works definately.

94 Ford Taurus GL 3.0L V6 with some issues. Please help!?

I need some help from someone who knows what they are talking about and please don't waste my time by telling me to junk the car. I am mechaniclly inclined but still need some help.

Issues with my car: hard to start in the mornings but starts fine the rest of the day, from a stop it has very poor acceleration and there is almost no response when i push the pedal to the floor at normal speed, it just slowly gains speed, and i have black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe and I get less than 100 miles out of a 16 gallon tank. Also the front end of the car shakes around 20 to 25 and goes away around 30 mph.

Things I've done: new plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, air filter, PCV valve, gas cap, oil change and filter, fuel filter, coolant flush, and thermostat. Cleaned throttle body, intake manifold, MAF, and linkage. Replaced transmission fluid, filter, and gasket. Replaced fuel injector o rings and fuel line o rings, and fuel regulator. Replaced about half of the air and vaccuum hoses, and several gasket on throttle body. I also pulled an EGR valve from a junked car of the same kind as mine and put it on mine.

What am I missing? Could it be one of the hoses leaking that I haven't replaced yet? Timing issue? Why am I running so rich?

If you have any suggestions that I can do myself please let me know and give me a break down of how to do it. Thanks for your help.94 Ford Taurus GL 3.0L V6 with some issues. Please help!?First thing I would do is get the codes scanned. Either a mechanic or autozone, you need a code to give you direction. It could be a bad engine coolent sensor or a MAF sensor, cleaning it would solve a lean condition and you have a rich condition, or the pcm causing this. Egr wont do this unless it was stuck open, but then it wouldnt idle if it was. Get the codes then post back what they are and I can give you some better direction. Low fuel psi is not the issue with black smoke . Also a fuel psi check would be helpfull, should have 35 at idle and 40 when the pedal is goosed.94 Ford Taurus GL 3.0L V6 with some issues. 1995 Lincoln Continental Performance Programmer?

I am looking for a performance tuner/programmer for my 1995 Lincoln Continental. I know there are many performance CHIPS that change the data of the coolant temps or air intake, but I don't want to use something that is tricking the computer... I want to program the computer using a tuner or programmer. Problem is, I can't seem to find any on eBay or on the web, maybe I am using the wrong keywords? If none exist, how much would it cost for me to take it to a mechanic and have him/her tune the car using a dynamometer? Is it the same price? Help would be appreciated.1995 Lincoln Continental Performance Programmer? The reason you can't find a programmer is that the ability to do that on your vehicle started in 1996. Reprogramability is a function that came into being with the passing of OBDII (on board diagnostics 2nd generation). Your's was the last OBDI vehicle. The ECM on your vehicle has 60 pins, an OBDII PCM has 104 pins and a lot more goodies inside too.

Honestly, with smog control laws what they are, if you are driving it on the street, about all these devices can do for you is modify the shift points in the transmission and raise the line pressure to give you neck snapping shifts. None of them can really improve the performance of your vehicle by altering fuel delivery or spark timing, that is all controlled by the Feds. Even the check engine light comes on for a different reason in OBDII than it does in OBDI.

Dyno tuning a stock engine is really a waste of time and money. You car already does that for you a couple times a second.

Here are some things that work that you can do to try to improve the way your Lincoln runs:

1 Buy the highest octane fuel that you can afford and run it all the time

2 Replace the oxygen sensors, when they get old the voltage they output falls out of range and won't set a code or turn the light on either

3 Clean the MAF sensor hot wire, it comes out after removing two tamper proof screws, dust it off with a small brush, gently!

4 Check the air pressure in all four tires, and adjust if low

5 Drive it like you stole it, the computer will adapt to your driving style and be ready when you give the command

Parting shot, when you change the O2 sensors and clean the MAF sensor, be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable to erase the adaptive strategy that the computer uses to run things the way they are now. It will learn from new and the improvements you get will be felt sooner than if you didn't. Good Luck!

Blown head gasket on car......how long will my car run, still runs good?

have a 96 mustang with a blown head gasket. it showed signs of it happening about two months ago with oil in the coolant. but not the check engine light is blinking and it is shaking horribly when its idle. the car still runs well when im going at a decent speed. the cheapest price i got to fix it was $1200 and the car is not worth that. could i maybe change the oil and the coolant and put some sealer in it to get a few more miles out of it? or is it just too late. any help or advice would be appreciated thanks.Blown head gasket on car......how long will my car run, still runs good?well , you could just do that .change the oil and coolant every week until you spend the total of what it would cost to fix.

also you could have a fouled spark plug. if you don't want to spend the money ,

just save the money and buy another one that you'll not mind spending money onBlown head gasket on car......how long will my car run, still runs good?Any answer as to how long this will continue to run is purely a guess. If the coolant is also mixing with the engine oil, it won't be too much longer.

I can tell you that I have never had any success, despite the outrageous claims on the labels, with any of the magic snake oil sealers available when it comes to a bad head gasket.Blown head gasket on car......how long will my car run, still runs good?Bottom line you need a new head gasket if you don't get it changed soon good bye engine because that white smoke indicates that your getting coolant in the cylinders and you have to be very careful with that because that will cause you engine to hdrolock which could cause bents rods and then you will have to either spend the money for to get the whole engine overhauled which will cost a lot more than 1200 bucks or a new car which again will cost more that 1200, and i have seen those sealer things cause more damage then fixing anything so i don't trust them, you would be better off to just get new gaskets seriously even if that means parking it till you get the money

I mixed orange and green coolant... how long before I should drain it.?

I know that your not supposed to mix them. but my coolant is leaking and i needed more bad. I drive a 97' oldsmobile silloute minivan

But why is it bad to mix the two?

How Long before I need to change\drain it?

What is a likely reason for the leak?

How much will it liekly cost to repair the coolant leak?

After I do drain the coolant should I use the original Orange coolant or can I stick with the green?

And anymore advice on this topic.I mixed orange and green coolant... how long before I should drain it.?don't worry about the mixing the two coolant they gonna fall anyway in less than 24 hours they will be in the road . spuag!!! leaked out.

the reason for leaking is a hole( or puncture)

price goes from 50.00 dollars to 650.00 dollars depdnding on the location of the leak(haed gasket, radiator or a simple hose)

    use the original orange.

one more advice in this topic:

repair the leakage as soon as possible You at risk to spoil the engine and/or transmission.( could it be both)I mixed orange and green coolant... how long before I should drain it.?it causes chemical reactions... id flush it when getting the repair..where is it leaking from..simple hose or radeator can b 50 to 150....blown head gasget 500 or moreI mixed orange and green coolant... how long before I should drain it.?The two will clog your heater and radiator. I always flush the new stuff out. To many p[roblems with it eating gaskets. I run regular green antifreeze.I mixed orange and green coolant... how long before I should drain it.?can you fix it yourself ? 1 800 radiator ! no ? take it to a shop that can !I mixed orange and green coolant... how long before I should drain it.?HAVE IT FLUSHED OUT... SOON....IT CAN GEL AND RUIN YOUR WHOLE COOLING SYSTEMI mixed orange and green coolant... how long before I should drain it.?your best bet is to follow the manufacturers instructions on coolant. If you mix the two it should not cause any damage but there is a chance of lessening the amount of freezing protection and the mix might boil at a lower temperature than desired. There are also lubricants in each that may not work too well together so, I would not drain the mix right this minute but monitor the engine for temp's and work the change in whenever you can.I mixed orange and green coolant... how long before I should drain it.?Drain it as soon as you can. The coolant will start to gel and clog things like the small hoses or the heater core and the small passages in the engine.

When you drain it, make sure you flush the system with clean water to get all of the old coolant out.

  • BMW Maintanence?

Okay, I own a shop, and I don't believe in 15k mile oil changes and all that junk.

I'm considering buying an 06' M3, and would like to ask the enthusiasts or the owners of BMW's, how is maintanence?

As a mechanic, I try to do everything extremely before it's %26quot;recommended.%26quot; Oil changes, 3k mi no more, coolant flush, 30k mi no more.

Basically, how affordable and how extensive of work are BMW's? I want a daily driver that's reliable but simple enough where I can do everything at my shop or in my driveway. Brakes, simple, belt change, simple, everything else seems to confuse me.

Also, what are the service intervals like for this car?BMW Maintanence? All BMWs have 50K miles of recommended service included. Combined with the warranty, that means that you won't pay out of pocket for anything but service above and beyond BMW's recommendations. The recommended service interval for M3s is 15K miles, so I tend to do an oil change in between. M3s use what is basically synthetic racing engine oil, so 5000 to 7500 miles between changes is normal use. As far as maintenance, there's also a complete fluid change after the initial break in period (1200 miles) that dealers may or may not know about.

M3s use Castrol 10W 60 (about 6 qts), so oil changes are not cheap. Everything else is relatively reasonable. I use mine as a daily driver and haven't had any issues. That said, when you have an engine as finely tuned as the S54, you accept some, shall we say, quirkiness.

One other point - the allocation for e46 M3s is gone, so if you haven't placed an order yet, you'll probably have to wait for the e90 in 2007/8.BMW Maintanence?%26quot;BMW maintenance?%26quot; I`m allergic on dumb Yahoo! questions.BMW Maintanence?Hi, i have one. I have had it for about 3 years. No probs at all really. They have computers, so a light will come on and i take it to my dad and he plugs his computer into it and my little baby tells my dads computer what is up! They don't have belts, they have chains which don't get changed like the belts do. I drive mine about 250 miles a week and have only done the servicing and had a new rad. The rad was because a stone went through it! Even the dealerships aren't that bad, i bought 2 wiper blades and they cost about 12 i think for both, and they fitted them for me (that might have been coz i am a girl!) They are really reliable and not really expensive to run. Get one they are great!BMW Maintanence?BMW parts are expensive. If you are willing to use aftermarket parts you can save some money there. If you like to change vehicles for the sake of change your resale will be better if all work is done at certified garage %26amp; all paper work is kept. If you want daily driver why are you looking at a vehicle with so much horsepower? Do you drive to work on a race course? The M3 is a model my husband has been admiring for years. He has decided it's too much $ for his purposes %26amp; has settled for a 3 series. I think he will remain a BMW car driver for always though as he LOVES the way the car drives/performs.

Service intervals are about the same as all others. Check with the dealer, some new vehicles include the service work up to 60,000 miles %26amp; then you are on your own. Hope this helpsBMW Maintanence? From one mechanic to another Most BMW are friendly to work on accept the starter motor i just change on a V-12 but all and all they actually pretty mechanic friendly and brakes drive shafts muffler hangers all well designed and come apart on the V12 batter location is behind the passenger and has its own like role cage around it very well protected from any impact es, these smaller classes are just fine belts hoses water pumps , brakes and all general servicing is fast and simple motor work is a different story but you'll be OK good luck on your purchase they have timing chains but they have serpentine fan belts, some have both rubber serpentine belts and V belts on the same motor all depends what you buy girl above me thinks they don't have rubber belts she means timing chainsBMW Maintanence? If you are a mechanic, then why in the world would you want to change synthetic oil at 3000 miles? Come on now.BMW Maintanence?www.google.comBMW Maintanence?I have had my X5 for 3 years now, I drive ALOT, have a tendency to drive fast, and have been told that I can be hard on a car....(ooops), but I have had no problems with it. With any high end vehicle though, you never want to scrimp or cut corners (you know that).......always using BMW parts, running on Supreme not Regular gasoline, changing essential fluids regularly etc....My husband is able attend to the basics and doesn't cuss as much as he does when working on my mom's toyota!!(lol)...Anyway with your knowledge of automobiles, you'll sail through most (if not all)of the maintainence......BMWs really are a quality ride!BMW Maintanence? You own your own shop but want to do work in your driveway???

What is the correct way to reset a coolant sensor on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am?

My husband took my car to a new place to get the oil changed on Friday. He left to pick me up at work which is 10 min with traffic. I got in and left right away and went to turn onto the main road. There was steam pouring out of the right side of my hood. Pulled onto the road (car behind me, couldn't back up) and pulled over immediately. Coolant was steaming out of the coolant cap area and the hood lining was soaked and dripping at this point. Went and got more coolant but light was still on. Called oil change place and they came up and checked it out. He said that mechanically thecar was fine but the sensor wasn't resetting and took the negative off the battery. Still didn't reset. I stopped in yesterday per their request and they tried for an hour and it still didn't reset. They were then going to replace the sensor at no charge to us. Now all of a sudden its not their fault and they have video evidence.. I think he's resetting it wrong and am looking to see how to do it right. Should he have taken the positive off the battery, or both? What is the correct way to reset a coolant sensor on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am?Not sure if the grand am has the same coolant sensor or not. If there is a sensor in the Radiator like my 1997 Grand Prix, That may be the issue. Hopefully everything is ok with your motor. In Radiator sensors fail and need replacing if you unplug the sensor and light go's out there is your sign. Look for a sensor under where the top hose connects with two wires that pushes into the side of the Radiator sealed with an O ring held with a wire clip be careful that clip launches and you may never see it again. You will need to reuse the clip. What is the correct way to reset a coolant sensor on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am?First of all if your car is overheating then it is not fine. You should have a reputable shop test your cooling system. There is a low coolant sensor that is mounted in the coolant resevoir near the bottom of the tank. What usually happens is that when the car overheats coolant is forced out of the cap. When you go to replace the lost coolant an air bubble forms near the plunger or the plunger sticks. A couple of raps with a plastic faced hammer near the electrical connnector area towards the bottom of the resevoir will dislodge any bubbles and loosen a stuck plunger. There is no reset procedure for this light. If the lamp still remains lit and the resevoir is full then you will need a new resevoir since the sensor cannot be replaced.

How much does an A/C Recharge job cost?

on average... I have a 1991 Honda Civic. It needs an A/C recharge, it has freon in it now, but I think that its illigal to use freon now. so it would need a change over. I also could buy my own coolant. so I need the quote for me buying my own coolant, or the mechanic using his coolant.

    Thanks in advance!!

PS. I live in Wisconsin. Don't know if that makes a difference. How much does an A/C Recharge job cost?I believe your vehicle uses R-12. Are you saying R-12 is illegal? It's not illegal, but the government would rather a professional use it. R-12 blows cooler than the current R-134.

To switch over from R-12 to R-134 is going to cost you a couple hundred at the least, having someone else do it, because the old refrigerant has to be derived and the system has to be lubricated with new oil, and if I'm not mistaken, some seals will have to be changed. If you can, research having someone add some R-12 to your system. It could cost around $80 for someone else to do it and if you know how to recharge it, you can buy the tools and refrigerant on ebay for around $40.

If you don't know how, ask someone who does or call around and ask how much they will charge. You are also going to want to make sure there are no leaks. How much does an A/C Recharge job cost?+/- 40 50 USDHow much does an A/C Recharge job cost?He might charge more using your juice. i have just bought a used 1999 honda accord ex a week ago. i dont know how to do a preventive maintainance. like how often do i have to change the oil, brake pads, brake fluid, radiator coolant, engine coolant, etc. please give me idea. my car has 2.3L, 4-cylinder engine. thanks a lotWhat to do to maintain a used car to keep it in top condition and prevent it from costly repair later?Congrats on the best running cars in the world. You made a great choice buying a Honda.

First did you buy it %26quot;certified pre-owned%26quot; from a dealership or did you buy the car from a private party?

If you bought the car certified pre-owned you should just look into your owners manual that should have came with the car. Look for scheduled maintence in the contents and follow it the best you can. It will tell you how often to change the oil and when to perform routine maintenance. If you are unsure the maintence has been completed just ask the dealership where you bought it.

Now here is the fun stuff. If you bought the car from a private party you should of asked the owner to provide receipts of the maintenance performed. If they can not; you could of asked for a lower price so you can get this maintence performed. Again just consult your owners manual for the scheduled maintenance intervals and follow them the best you can.

=========== just buy a repair manual that goes with your car =====

all cars require maintenance from time to time

just keep to a schedule and get it done. What to do to maintain a used car to keep it in top condition and prevent it from costly repair later?Congratulations on your new set of wheels.

First source of reference is the owners manual, it should have come with the car, else you should be able to get it from the www.honda.com web site.

The manual will show you all the scheduled maintenance checks and things to change.

Depending on the number of miles on your car and how it was used and maintained,, you may want to consider the following.

Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Breather Element Change at a big box store for a very reasonable price. If you get the premier service, they will check all the other fluid levels, tires, lights, wipers etc. They will also rotate the tires (take them off and put them on different locations ie.. front to back etc).

Depending on the miles and maintenance check on your brakes, and timing belt to see if they need to be replaced. Same for your radiator fluid (coolant), and transmission fluid.

Finally the hoses should be checked for strength and rot.

If the tires are in good shape tread wise and are less than 7 years old you should be in ship shape.

Remember autos are like people, no guarantees!

Join a fan club for your car so that you can trade information and opinions on various things about that specific car. Here is just one example for a honda accord forum:

Have fun stay safe and remember every 5 miles over the limit is reducing your mpg by 3 to 5 percent. What to do to maintain a used car to keep it in top condition and prevent it from costly repair later?keeping every thing greased, oil changes are good, but remember, fuel pumps are in the gas tanks now. fuel injectors are used, struts are used in almost every make of car. These and other Items are costly to replace. There is just so much that can be done, befor hi miles will pain fully attack your bank accounts. What to do to maintain a used car to keep it in top condition and prevent it from costly repair later?i own a repair shop and i do a lot of preventive maintenance for some of my customers, you have to keep the oil changed real often also keep a close watch on the belts and check the brakes about every 10 thousand miles on it also ,rotate the tires, and mainly when something small goes wrong with it,have it fixed right away people often drive their cars with a lot of small stuff wrong with it,and it turns to bigger things later on down the line, but that's one way to stay ahead of it is fix it when it breaks, and this way when something big does tear up on it at least it don't seem like junk when your fixing it,very often people don't keep up with all the small things on a car and then they wonder why they cant sell it and get their money back out of it,i buy a used vehicle most of the time drive it for 5 years, and have always made money on it after driving it for that long, but their usually nicer when i sell them than when i buy them, good luck with this hope it helps.

  • Kawasaki Vulcan 500 Maintanence Questions?

I purchased a 2007 Vulcan 500 used with no owners manual. For peace of mind, I would like to change fluids out for a clean slate so to speak. I have searched the internet everywhere so Ive brought this question to you Do It Yourself folks out there as a guide for me and for the many out there looking for the answers to these folowing maintainence questions:

    1. How to change oil and filter w/ interval recommendations

    2. How to flush coolant

    3. How to change air filter

I believe this would be the first guide for the Vulcan 500 motorcycle for Do It Yourselfers on the net so thank you for your answers in advance.

Ps would rather spend the 50.00 for the manual latter so I can ride now!!!Kawasaki Vulcan 500 Maintanence Questions? The air box cover is under the seat, in the front below the fuel tank.

To remove the seat - remove the bolt at the rear of the seat - put your fingers under the piece of metal to prevent scratching the fender - hit the hump of the seat to the rear of the bike to un-hook it.

The filter is foam - wash it and re-oil it.

    http://street.parts-unlimited.com/16/138

To get access to the radiator cap - remove the speedometer cluster on the fuel tank.

Have a pair of needle nose pliers ready to remove the speedometer cable when the meter is lifted.

    Loosen the radiator cap.

The coolant drain bolt is on the water pump cover.

Right side of engine - radiator hoses go the water pump cover - drain bolt is on the bottom of the cover - it has a sealing washer on it.

Remove the bolt to drain the coolant.

    Re-install the bolt.

Use 50/50 mix of coolant/water rated for aluminum engines.

Slowly fill at the radiator cap (slowly to prevent water pockets).

The oil drain bolt is on right %26quot;side%26quot; of engine - it has a sealing washer on it.

Put a drain pan under it - remove the bolt - sit on the bike and tilt it to the right to drain all of the oil out - re-install the bolt.

Put the drain pan under the spin-on oil filter at the front of the crankcase.

    Remove the filter.

Dip your finger in oil and wet the o-ring of the new filter.

Clean the engine surface the filter touches and install the new filter hand tight.

Hold the bike straight up and down (as if you were sitting on it) when checking the oil level.

Remove the oil fill cap (top of the clutch cover - rt side engine cover).

Fill with brand name 10W40 4 stroke motor oil until it covers the oil level window (right side engine cover).

Install the fill cap - start and run the engine for a few minutes - to fill the oil filter and let the oil circulate throughout the engine.

Stop the engine and let it sit for a few minutes to let the oil drain down to the crankcase.

Re-check the oil level - bike straight up %26amp; down, the oil should cover 3/4 of the window - drain or add oil if necessary.

    Purchase a manual

How to fix a hot fridge?

I have a fridge that heats up instead of cooling down. Would coolant solve my problem? I have already tried changing the temperature knob %26amp; leaving it on for 24 hours, but no change. And yes, the fridge does have power, the light comes on and it hums like it's running. How to fix a hot fridge? If its actually producing heat, there may be a refrigerant problem. If its just not cooling, it could be a few things ie; compressor, fans, valves etc. Depending on the style of fridge, it could be stuck in a hot gas defrost cycle. If the freezer isn't working either, its most likely the refrigerant or the compressor. Ensure the coil on the back of the fridge is clean or the refrigerant wont be able to get rid of the heat from the compartment. Hope this helps you get to the problem.

Thanks!93 Nissan 240SX smog check help? You changed the oil and oil filter, air filter, but you may try replacing the spark plugs with NGK Iridium or Platinum Plugs, replace the distributor, and ignition rotor, and replace the ignition wires with 8mm NGK plug wires.

Sometimes it is the simplest things that may help...if you fail again, then you can try replacing the O2 sensor. If the cataytic converter does not rattle when knocked, then it is still working.

You exhaust system does not matter for pollution, since the pollution is handled at the point of the cat. converter. The muffler does not remove pollutants, all it does is muffle the raw sound of exhaust gases and inhibit flow.

How do I pass the NO(PPM) with 15mph? Any suggestion? Replace O2 sensor, catalytic converter?

Thanks!93 Nissan 240SX smog check help?Replacing the muffler will not help the emissions. The catalytic converter COULD be an issue, but at 24K, I rather doubt it.

Several things could be causing your NOx failure, but most likely either ignition timing is not correct or the EGR valve isn't operating properly. The fact that the car passes at the 25MPH test indicates that the cat is PROBABLY functioning well.

If there is an exhaust leak before the converter (exhaust manifold, exhaust header pipe, hole in pipe, loose O2 sensor etc.) the added oxygen will cause the NOx to rise.

Base timing should be at 10掳BTC, with the timing connector jumped. After adjusting the timing, remove the jumper. If 10掳 cannot be achieved, and the timing is advanced to something between 20掳 and 35掳 BTDC, chances are that the throttle position switch will require replacement and adjustment.

If these two areas are acceptable, then check the EGR valve function.

    1) Warm the engine to operating temp.

    2) with engine idling, apply vacuum to the EGR valve (not the transducer). The engine should stumble and run very rough or even die. If it does, then the valve and the ports are satisfactory. If the engine doesn't change, then determine if the valve is defective or if the passage is restricted.

    3) Determine if the transducer is working correctly, and if the feeder tube for the transducer is clear, and that the rubber hose from the tube to the bottom of the transducer is not damaged or burned, or disconnected. If you follow through here, chances are you will find the cause of your wlwvated NOx.93 Nissan 240SX smog check help?Yes that is the EGR valve you are describing. Change th e O2 sensor if it is cheap depending on the car model. Cat should be good if mile is only 24k original miles. Only change as last resort as it can be a few hundred bucks to replace.

Checks for vacuum and exhaust leaks. Replace all vacuum hoses with new hoses just to be sure its very cheap to replace. Buy one of those bottles that claim the help you pass the smog. Follow the directions on the bottle. If you fail to pass you can get a refund from the company making the claim. You must read all the terms and small print and save all paperwork.

Always make sure when you bring it in to test that it is already at operating temp and not cold. Also check the idle and make sure that is correct as that alone can make you fail an emission tests. You forgot one biggie that doesn't cost much and can make the difference. Change the spark plugs and PVC valve and breather element if you have one. Good luck

Anyway if you remove the air filter box left side and coolant tank and washer filler pipe right side low beam bulbs are changed out from inside the engine compartment. I first get to the gray round covers mark (line) the closed posistion with a felt tip pen. Now turn the covers about 1/8 turn counter clockwise mark (dot) where the cover stops. That makes it much easier to line back up after ward. Under those covers is two wires red and black red to the bulb and black onto the special grounding plate held to the bulb by a gold spring. Pull off the red wire unfasten the spring ground plate and (halogen) bulb will come out. Always replace Bulbs in pairs because halogen bulbs dim over time. Halogen bulbs are available auto parts stores... Also if you have.

High Intensity Discharge bulbs that use transformers the only place you can buy the special bulbs is the dealership and it is difficult somtimes to diagnosis you have to have a known good bulb then go to the transformer. Transformers are expensive $ 300+. Bulb cost almost $ 200

High coolant temp in the message box of my chevy monte carlo.?

what does that mean? i just had a tune up about 5 days ago. Plus, do you guys think 175 dollars is too much to spend for my car's tune up? he changed the spark plugs, oil,air filters, and the PVC valve. I spent 75 dollars at autoparts and gave him 100 bucks. How much do they usually go for? I know i have a lot of questions on there.High coolant temp in the message box of my chevy monte carlo.?you got a good deal on the tune up,that was a real fair price for what all he done, you may have a sensor going bad in the coolant reservoir ,and that may be what is sending the signal to set the light off, have this checked, also make sure the reservoir is full of coolant,it has a mark on it full when hot or cold, make sure its where it should be at,if it is you could have a thermostat going bad on it,or just the sensor going bad ,sometimes it will send out a false reading and make that message appear, but have it checked to be sure, you don't want to run it hot, good luck with it.High coolant temp in the message box of my chevy monte carlo.?check your coolant level. you might need a thermostat or water pump. if its not over heating then it can be the temp switch which looks exactly like the temp sensor. or it could be the temp sensor. the temp sensor sends a signal to the fan what the car gets warm to cut on. the temp switch is the light that tells you check coolant.

thats about right! its usually about 200 bucks since you bought the parts it came out cheaper.High coolant temp in the message box of my chevy monte carlo.?On today's cars its more than just spark plugs and oil change , If he did a complete tune up you got away good , now the over heating has to do with the antifreeze check and make sure its full he should have done that for you if its full you might need a thermostat and new antifreeze hope this helps.High coolant temp in the message box of my chevy monte carlo.?going labor rate is about 70 - 80 an hour, so that's about right.

check the connections on the thermostat housing for the coolant temp. sensor. They may have knocked it lose, and that would couse a false high reading.

Estimates to have transmission fluid replaced?

I've got a few questions about cost for maintanence on my older Saturn. And I go to a local garage.

How much to change the transmission fluid? I've also heard differing opinions on that. Some say it'll mess up your car and don't do it. Others say it's just as necessary as changing the oil.

How much to get a coolant flush done?

And how much for a tune-up and what should be involved in a tune-up?Estimates to have transmission fluid replaced?Trans fluid needs to be flushed every 60,000km. Not changed, flushed.

People are right when they say it can do more harm than good

but thats only when you havent been doing your regular fluid changes

on the transmission, say you never done one in 100,000km.

    Coolant flush around 80-100 bucks.

Tune up is usually spark plugs , air filters, tire pressures, small work.Estimates to have transmission fluid replaced?don't have it flushed unless you want problems, just have the garage drop the transmission fluid pan and change the transmission filter and bolt back up and refill with new fluid, about $60 to $75.

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. I need to replace coolant water. Can I do it myself? How? thx...?

When I was having my oil changed, they check all other liquid in the car. This guy told me coolant water needs to replaced since it is kinda dirty. They charge 70 bucks for it. A gallon of coolant is $10. I am a college student so every dollar counts. Does anyone know if I can do it myself and if so, describe how. Thanks a lot.I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. I need to replace coolant water. Can I do it myself? How? thx...?Econ, does your car have over 100.000 on it? Today's antifreeze is good for that many mi.. The price they want is high compared to the mid west( the Oh,Ky Ind,Tenn,W. Va cause we have both dealers and auto parts suppliers / corner garages that offer a $49.95 Flush %26amp; Fill. So, ya might want to shop around for a better price( This not only replaces antifreeze but flushes out the heater core and any corrosion built up in the engine block and radiator). OK, if ya just want to replace the antifreeze in your radiator look underneath the car on (can't remember which side) and on the bottom of the radiator( actually it is on the side of the radiator facing towards th engine) is what is called a %26quot;petcock%26quot;. It is a T-handle shaped screw screwed into your radiator and you back it off counter -clock wise to loosen it and ya drain the radiator this way, or you can just take the bottom radiator hose off and just let it gush out the bottom inlet. Take the garden hose and let it run from the radiator cap opening out the bottom hose outlet for about 5 min to flush the radiator and let all the water drain out. Either close the petcock or replace the radiator hose and tighten up the clamp on the hose. Now pour in a gallon of pure antifreeze till it tops off or ya run out of the bottled stuff and add water to top off the radiator. Now, start the engine, turn on the heater full blast( defroster and all set on th highest temp.). Wait for the thermostat to open and add more water (The water / antifreeze level will drop in the radiator when this happens , oh yea , leave the rad. cap off when doing this so you can see the level of water / antifreeze drop down) and top it off with more water*(use distilled water cause tap water contains hard minerals and will clog up the radiator over time) . Don't worry about the over flow jug unless it is low/ empty. In that case, buy another jug of the 50 / 50 mix antifreeze to top it off to the proper level marked on the side of the jug,.( I forgot to tell you when buying the antifreeze buy what is compatible with the yellow antifreeze or the new 100,000 mi antifreeze and buy just the pure stuff to pour in the radiator and use the 50 / 50 mix for the overflow jug)I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. I need to replace coolant water. Can I do it myself? How? thx...?there is a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator. its usually plastic and a different color than the rest of the radiator. you should be able to turn it loose with your hands. MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS COLD!!!!! you will find this plug by looking from the under the front bumper of your car. you may have to move the splash gaurd out of your way. be sure to replace everything so as not to cause yourself future problems. after all is drained, repace w/ new coolant using 50water50coolant. last but not least if the plug has a rubber ring (o-ring) on it be sure that it is in good condition or else the new coolant you spend $8-$15 on will just leak outI have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. I need to replace coolant water. Can I do it myself? How? thx...?Find the lower radiator hose and loosen the clamp that holds it. Pull the hose off and drain the fluid. Do this when the engine is cold and remove the radiator cap first to relieve the pressure on the system.

Once the fluid has drained out, reinstall the lower radiator hose and tighten the clamp. Pour in a mixture of 50/50 coolant and water. It is a good idea to premix the coolant before you put it in, that way you know you have the correct amount in the system.

good luck.I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. I need to replace coolant water. Can I do it myself? How? thx...?Find the plug on the bottom of the radiator, remove it, drain coolant into container, replace plug, depending on where you are and the weather that will decide what mix of coolant/water you should use, it is actually on the gallon of coolant. It is a really easy job shouldn't take longer than 20 minutes. Oh yeah do it when your engine isn't that hot.I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. I need to replace coolant water. Can I do it myself? How? thx...?Basically, you drain the radiator from a valve underneath (called a petcock). Then you run a garden hose into the radiator until it's clear. Finally, fill it up with the recommended mix of antifreeze and water. The link below is more detailed and has all the safety and environment mumbo jumbo in it.

k so i am trying to save a buck on changing my transmission fluid on my 2006 toyota corolla. my stuff is black and i think thats a pretty good sign to chagne it. i just hit 30k miles and am trying to do the maintaince on my own. already got new spark plugs, air filter, and oil change. Is there anything else i need to do? alignment?

i dont have my users mauan and dnt know where to begin.

1.What kind of transmission fluid do i need. how much and whats the cost?

    2. whats the process? in detail please

also coolant. when shoudl i change that? Thank you SOOOOO much for your helpChanging transmission fluid on a 2006 toyota corolla myself HELP!!!?Your vehicle takes Toyota Type T-IV transmission fluid. It is very, very important that you use this fluid only. To start out, I'd recommend that you buy 4-5 quarts of this fluid, as well as a new transmission drain plug gasket. They can be easily and cheaply obtained from the dealer. Underneath your vehicle, if you look at the bottom of the transmission you will see that transmission drain plug. This plug requires a hex socket (10mm to be specific), and looks like a regular bolt head turned inside out. Removing that plug will allow the transmission fluid to drain. Once the fluid is done draining, replace the gasket with the one you purchased, and tighten the plug. Add 3 and 1/2 quarts of fluid, start your vehicle and allow it to warm to operating temperatures. Check the level of your fluid once it has warmed up, aiming to have the level within the %26quot;hot%26quot; range on the dipstick. Typically, 3 and 1/2 will put you right there, but it is important to check nonetheless. This is the simplest form of transmission fluid service, the more complicated requiring a flush machine to perform.

Toyota Type T transmissions, especially Corollas are notorious for the fluid turning dark at early mileage. You can attempt to have them try to do something about it under warranty, but they will feed you the diplomatic safe answer of %26quot;well, it all depends on your driving habits...%26quot;Changing transmission fluid on a 2006 toyota corolla myself HELP!!!?Thanks daryl362 for this informative explanation , could you please advise from where should I add new oil ?

If the car is in good shape. Get a Chilton's or Helms service manual for your car from the auto parts store. You should only need to get an alignment if the car pulls in any direction or your tires have a bad wear pattern.

Fuel filter should also be changed.

    1997 chevy cavalier problems... help?

So my engine mounts need to be replaced. Is that something I can do myself or is it better to go to someone?

My car makes a squealing noise ( sounds like brakes when they need to be replaced) but it stops when the car stops. What can it be? It eems to come from the front left side ( driver side)...

My car stalls at random times usually when I am at a stop ( i have an automatic) but occassionally it will stall when I am pulling into a parking spot.

What I have done with my car in the past few years. Replaced all the spark plugs and lines. Replaced 3 out of 4 fuel injectors. Changed my oil/air filter.changed my oil. Added coolant. Added steering fluid. I think that is all the liquids I have added and changes I have made with the car.

I have to get smogged but it will fail unless my engine light goes off ( multiple engine misfire) and I don't know how to solve what is causing that problem...

please help:)1997 chevy cavalier problems... help?motor mounts if its the wish bone on the top of the engine i would say go for it.

How to reset the GM message center with aftermarket receiver?

How can I reset various warnings in the message center of my 2000 Monte Carlo without the factory receiver installed. I have a kenwood receiver with this device http://www.crutchfield.com/S-BifYRJOpZNb

When I start my car up it beeps 30-40 times consecutively for low tire pressure, change engine oil, low washer fluid, low coolant level. Before the aftermarket receiver was installed, you would reset these warnings by using the factory receiver. Please help, I can't find the answer to this anywhere. How to reset the GM message center with aftermarket receiver? My wife has an 04 Impala. With it, the owner's manual gives instructions on resetting the change oil chime. It requires having the key on and pressing the accelerator so many times (I think 5) in a matter of so many seconds. I'm pretty certain that yours would advise you of the same thing.

I'd say %26quot;call a dealer%26quot; but that would be useless sometimes as dealerships dont like ppl to change their crappy Delco radios.

You can register to the forums at www.the12volt.com This is a GREAT website that is watched regularly by ppl, including myself. You get answers relatively quickly. Search for it first but if you cant find it, post, just make sure you post in the most appropriate area. Also, here is what looks to be a good website dedicated to monte carlo fans: http://www.montecarloforum.com/ it has a search feature to but you have to be registered to use it and post. I'm willing to bet that it will answer your question.

    good luck.

Also you would be losing oil or water levels. Try a compression check. How do you know if you have a blown head gasket 97 lt1 camaro?Check for water coming from your exhaust pipe. Look for gas bubbles in the radiator when the engine is running. Check the real temperature of the coolant, the Gage may be in error.
