Hope this heps! How do you change the engine coolant to a 97 cavalier?at the bottom of the radiator there is a valve sticking out .turn the valve to open it remove the radiator cap and wllow the fluid to drain completely. close the valve and add new coolant and water mixed at 50percent water /50 percent antifreeze ( you can buy the antifreeze already mixed with water )until radiater is full. put cap on ,start car, check that valve is not leaking by a visual inspection of the valve, and run for one minute turn car off and add more fluid if needed. this should protect from freezing in most states. How do you change the engine coolant to a 97 cavalier?First locate the radiator petcock, this closely resembles a wind up toy key and must be turned counterclockwise, start the engine from a cold start and feed water into the reserve tank for 5 to ten minutes or until the coolant runs clear, usually your petcock is located at the bottom of the radiator on the left or right most side facing towards the engine. Remove the hose and wait until no coolant exits the system meaning your car is bone dry of coolant, quickly turn off the vehicle and secure the petcock by turning it clockwise until it is reasonably tight (not extremely tight). Mix the recommended amount of coolant for your in 50/50 portions (1/2 water, 1/2 straight coolant) you can also by premixed coolant but you will need to buy more to achieve the amount you need. Use a funnel to fill the radiator and once again start the car, continue to fill the radiator until the coolant reaches about 1 inch from the bottom of the filler neck. Fill the reserve tank up to the cold marking and run the car for about 5-10 minutes, if the coolant is below the hot marking on your reserve tank, fill it until it reaches the hot mark.
