Is the possible? Car troubles...?

Our car was running hot. We had it looked at by a friend at his shop and got an oil change. He told us it was a blown head gasket. My husband drove it home (because we can't afford to get it fixed right now) and it wasn't running hot anymore. Ultimitaly, we are getting a 2nd opinion tomarrow morning. But, is it possible he is wrong and alls it needed was an oil change and some coolant?? How does he KNOW its th hd gasket? (what is the test?)

*we just got the used car not to long ago.Is the possible? Car troubles...?The guy changed the oil. There was probably antifreeze in the oil (milky and foamy greenish white on dip stick) then he probably checked the radiator for oil which I imagine he found. There's a 99% chance he's right. If he's not don't ever go to him again because he would easily be able to tell for sure, and if it's not true he was just trying to swindle you.Is the possible? Car troubles...?if there is a chocolately brown looking substance in your radiator, that's usually a sign. it's the oil leaking into your coolant. Is the possible? Car troubles...?There is a test that checks for exhaust gasses in the coolant.

You are smart to get a second opinion, but be aware that blown head gaskets, for one reason or another, aren't a rare occurrence lately. Is the possible? Car troubles...?Yeah.. no, your mechanic is most likely correct. If it's only used on short commutes I have driven a truck for 5 years with a blown head gasket(not recommended). I'm a frugal mechanic and I don't care if the truck dies.Is the possible? Car troubles...?tell your husband to check the oil. if there is anti-freeze in the oil or your car is smoking white smoke then it,s safe to say it,s a head gasket. it could just be the thermostat sticking. that,s why coming back home maybe the thermostat opened back up.Is the possible? Car troubles...?A coolant pressure test will help find the answer - sometimes it as simple to diagnose as looking inside the oil filler and if it looks like chocolate milk - you have a blown head gasket. They can also blow to the outside of the cylinder and then it is much harder to see, that's when the test comes in handy as often the evidence burns off.

Find a good mechanic as the results and procedures for repair can vary with the age/mileage on your car. High mileage can lead to other problems to consider and if it's worth fixing. Is the possible? Car troubles...?Hi, She asked about 'The Test', people. Here are the Tests: Milky oil, white exhaust smoke, the smell of combustion (exhaust) from radiator, running car without cap to check for surge or bubbles and lastly a compression/leakdown test. Also, removing the spark plugs and cranking the engine will produce water/coolant out of the hole if the head gasket is bad or the head is cracked. If it passes these tests your head gasket and head(s) are fine....Geo
